Awana Genting SkyWay: all the way to the top in glass bottom gondolas

Last weekend we did a quick trip to check out the new Awana Genting SkyWay. We love the views and the cool air over at the highlands and glass bottom gondolas sounded like a lot of fun!

Awana Genting SkyWay

The Awana Genting SkyWay is well signposted along the road up to Genting so one easily find it by just following the arrows.  The old cable car is closed at the moment but apparently will be reopened in the future. There is a free car park at the SkyWay, and you will need to make your way through what seems like a shopping mall in construction to get to the modern ticketing area.

When we were there on a Sunday morning only the self-service kiosks were in operation, and they only accept cash. Many of the businesses up at the top also didn’t yet have their card payments sorted so come with enough cash! We splurged on a glass bottomed gondola on the way up (RM50/person, ) and took the regular one on the way back (RM8/person). Kids under 90 cm travel for free.

Apparently the new Awana Genting cable car is quicker and more efficient than the old one, and each of the 99 gondolas can carry 10 passengers. 10 of the gondolas are fitted with glass floors.

The glass bottom gondola was great fun! The kids were lying flat on the floor most of the time taking selfies, while the adults with vertigo were trying to concentrate on the views.

The new SkyWay is located on the other side of the hill and passes right by the Chin Swee temple, where a series of escalators takes you down to the temple. You can stop here using the same ticket. The whole journey takes about 10 minutes.

While we loved the new gondolas and the kids thought the glass bottom gondola was the king of cable cars, the adults perhaps prefer the forest views of the old cable car. The new SkyWay passes through more buildings and the atrocious highlands towers are visible most of the way. The stop at the temple is a huge bonus though!

We don’t know what exactly this building site next to the Arena of Stars is – but if it is the future site of the long-awaited theme park we think there is little chance it will be opened within a year as expected…

It is huge and mostly empty and looks and sounds like a building site still. There are, however, already loads of food options from local fare to the two star foodie attractions: Cafés Richards is a famous Parisian café and Motorino offers New York style pizzas made in their cool designer pizza ovens.

The kids expectedly gravitated towards the pizza and we thoroughly enjoyed our Neopolitan, chewy crust and accepted that in a location like this your pizza will cost over MYR50. Once the construction right next to the restaurants is finished, they will most likely be some of the best dining options here. You can read a true foodie review of Motorino here.
