Ramadan buffet at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur

What’s not to love about an all paid for journey into KL for a mélange of culinary tastes at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur? Though we don’t choose buffets often (preferring à la carte), we were quite impressed with the all-you-can-eat Sajian Istimewa Seafood Ramadan buffet!

Starting 12 April until 12 May, ‘the Shang’ is having a gorgeous spread for meat eaters, but this buffet is especially for seafood lovers. Most eye catching was the tower of oysters, fresh mussels and salmon, crabs, delectable prawns and the seafood BBQ pit. This is an assisted buffet, where the staff plated up for us. A few dishes are spicy, but everything is very palatable.

Our favourites

We loved the light yet creamy seafood chowder (not an easy dish to find), the beef mignon (it was very tender) and the chicken shawarma, which was pocketed in a light and very fresh pita bread. The salmon fish head curry was very yum, though with lots of bones, so be weary.

I love a good Malay salad and the Kerabu Tomato and the Kerabu Taugeh did not disappoint. It was such a delightful mix of sweet, sour, chilli and crunch – combined wonderfully. For the vegetarians there is otherwise not much choice, but we loved all we found including the ratatouille, mushrooms and ladyfingers (I thought it was a bit undercooked).

Desserts? Definitely!

The desserts were placed in a small enclosed area, so do line up early to get your preferred choices. We tried the corn jellies, which were creamy and refreshing. The sago Melaka was premixed but still so yum, the almond tart was a bit dry but the cookie base was divine! The banana balls or cokodok was so-so – we had better at many a roadside stall. To end our desserts feast, we had some of the yummiest fresh mango. Fresh fruit is always a winner with us, especially when it comes to our kids.

The winner is…?

All in all, out of the myriad of tastes, my husband declared the pizza and date tart the winner. I loved the kerabu and the beef mignon. Go and try the buffet! It’s a pretty good steal at RM148 nett per person and runs from Tuesday – Sunday. Plus, they have the scrumptious and very tasty Turkish coffee to finish everything off. Do you prefer to eat at home? They offer free delivery within a 10km radius for purchases amounting to RM388 nett and above. Have a look at their website here. For buffet bookings please call them on 03 2074 3900 or 019 390 2257.

The hotel has got numerous other offerings such as afternoon tea, hampers, ladies night out, Secretaries’ Week later on this month and a business set lunch. They even have a flash-your-age offer, where the birthday person receives a discount based on your age when you dine with four others. A perfect time to dust off your granny!

We were invited by the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur. As always, our opinion is honest and our own!
