Malaysian books for children

I love to read books that are set in the country where I live or travel to. You can learn a lot through fiction – a perfect excuse to sit in the shade with a good book. I have searched well-written and beautifully illustrated children’s books with a Malaysian angle for some time to teach that habit to the kids as well, but haven’t been too successful.

Malaysian books for children, where to get?? Silverfish bookstore in Bangsar Village II is beautifully set up and it stocks possibly the best range of Malaysian children’s books. I couldn’t leave without these:

My favourite Malaysian books for children

Puteri Tioman is a beautifully illustrated book about a baby turtle and its journey in the sea. More of an educational story on habitat and threats to the Malaysian turtles, it is perfect for kids hungry for details on nature. With a strong conservation message, this book is a must-read to anyone traveling to the Malaysian islands or East coast with kids.

Tulip – The Dog that Ate Nightmares by Quek Sue Yian and Khairul Azmir looks like no other children’s book. The story of a little girl and her gluttonous dog is accompanied with cartoon-like pictures that may be too scary for sensitive little ones, but the details are very cool for the more daring readers.

I also picked up the more traditional picture book Dill the Little Elephant, written by Ming and Volker and illustrated by Yusof Gajah. This classic lost-and-found story introduces animals native to Malaysia and is suitable even for toddlers.
