We were invited by New World PJ Hotel for their Kid-Start Adventure package, which seemed suitable for my two girls who are 5 and 2 years old.
The day prior to checking in, I contacted the hotel to see if I could have a slightly earlier check in time, as my youngest daughter normally takes her nap at around 1pm (normal check in time is 2 pm). Not only did they get back to me promptly, they willingly obliged with an earlier check in time too. We were off to a good start already!
New World PJ Hotel: here we come!
When I took our luggage bag out from storage, my 5 year old happily squealed: “Are we going for a holiday?!”
It’s been almost a year since we went on a proper holiday and I don’t know how long it will take before we can go for another one, so the next best thing is to do ‘staycations’. Hotel room, swimming pool, room service… kids will think it’s a holiday anyway!
New World Hotel is conveniently located in Petaling Jaya, right next to Paradigm Mall. The hotel shares the same car park with the mall, so if you are driving there, be sure to keep an eye out for the signs at the car park which says ‘hotel lobby’. Checking in was quick and easy and the staff were very polite.
Room with a tent
Our room was located on the 26th floor. As part of the Kid-Start Adventure package, a camping tent is set up in the room for the kids. As soon as we entered our room, the kids spotted the tent and dashed straight to it. They were pretty excited to have it, as you normally don’t get a tent in a hotel room! Our room also had a great view overlooking PJ.
Tea time treats
The Kid-Start Adventure package comes with a choice of afternoon tea or a dinner set for two adults and two kids. As my little girls and I love having girly tea sessions, we opted for the afternoon tea. This is served at the Lounge (at reception level) from 3 – 6pm. The theme for this month’s afternoon tea was ‘Ladies Socie-tea’. For each tea set sold, 10% of the proceeds will be channelled to YWCA Vocational Training Opportunity Centre. Afternoon tea with a great cause – I was sold.
There was a magnificent variety of sweet cakes and savoury canapés, as well as a wide range of coffees and teas to choose from. Some of the sweet delights included were heart shaped chocolate strawberry mousse cake, raspberry swiss rolls, red velvet cheesecakes just to name a few. What really caught my eye though was the chocolate high heel shoe filled with strawberries and served with chocolate dipping sauce! What a treat! As for the savouries, there were chicken sliders, avocado mash brioches, beef bresaola and parmesan baguettes and smoked salmon wraps. We found them all delicious.
The kids were given their own afternoon tea set, which comprised of a bowl of guacamole and chips, chicken nuggets, egg sandwich and some sweet treats like cake pops, fruit tart, lamington, marshmallows and chocolate buttons. They each had a cup of hot chocolate to go with the treats too. They thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m not ashamed to say I ate whatever was left of their guacamole as it was absolutely delish!
Time to splash
After all that sugar, we needed to find a way to burn off all the kids energy before they started bouncing off the walls, so we headed up to the highest floor at level 30 where the pools and kids trampoline are located. The kids had a good time bouncing up and down the trampoline, before proceeding to burn off more energy at the infinity pool. There is also a decent sized kids pool for the little ones to play in. The view you get from the rooftop is amazing.
Dinner at PJ’s Bar & Grill
As the kids were getting tired, we decided to have dinner at PJ’s Bar & Grill, the hotel rooftop bar and restaurant located right next to the pool. We would have loved to dine al fresco to enjoy the beautiful night view of Petaling Jaya, but unfortunately it was raining that night so we sat inside. PJ’s Bar & Grill specialises in grilled items (as the name suggests) and they are also famous for their drinks. We opted for a pappardelle beef ragu for the kids and a mixed grill platter to share.
As it was a Monday night, the restaurant was rather quiet, however our food took a while to come out. And when you have two hungry kids famished after swimming, the wait did seem like an eternity. Food wise, the pasta won hands down. The ragu was very flavourful and the kids polished off the whole plate. The mixed grill was a bit of a disappointment, as we didn’t expect it to come in skewers form and most of the meat were lacking in taste. However the drinks made up for it so do give that a go if you are ever there! With the Kid-Start Adventure package, we were entitled to 20% off the bill at any of the hotel restaurants.
If you stay at New World PJ Hotel during Ramadan, you could also opt for their ‘Santapan Warisan’ buffet at Pasar Baru! Have a look at our review here.
The next morning…
After a good night’s rest, we headed down to Pasar Baru, the hotel’s all day dining restaurant, for breakfast. There was only a small selection of breakfast items on offer (buffet style). They had congee, nasi lemak, a few pastries, boxed cereal and an egg station. Would have loved to have more variety, but perhaps it was due to CMCO and the occupancy rate that they have scaled down on the breakfast selection.
After lunch, it was time to check out and head home, much to the kids dismay. Although it was a short staycation, I can’t tell you how nice it was to take a break from routine and to be on ‘holiday’ again. The kids had a lovely time at New World PJ Hotel and are already bugging us for another staycation!
