We joined a safari tour at Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands with our three young kids. It was an exciting adventure! It offered an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about wildlife and it created lasting memories for us.
We took a grab from KLCC around 8am to Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands, which is located in the scenic Gamuda Cove in Selangor. After a 45 minutes drive we arrived at the park for our safari journey, which began at 9am. We were greeted by a friendly ranger and a robust safari truck was ready to take us on an hour-long expedition through the wetlands. Before hopping onto the truck, we were given mosquito repellent, to ensure a comfortable and insect-free experience.
Offroad safari
The safari truck was an exciting experience right from the beginning. Driving offroad with a lovely breeze through nature is enjoyable for both kids and adults! The tour through Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands started with a drive through a conservation area, showcasing transformed man-made wetlands. This area, once a mining and sand dredging area, now boasts lakes teeming with fish, lotus plants and water lilies. As we drove through the lush greenery, we spotted ducks, wild birds and their nests hanging from the trees: proof of nature’s resilience and adaptability.
Crocodiles and hippos
The adventure continued down a picturesque bamboo trail, leading us to a recreational zone at Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands. Here, the first highlight was the crocodile lake, where we looked at these ancient creatures both swimming and lounging by the shore. The excitement peaked at the second highlight: the hippo pond enclosure, where we observed two majestic hippos.
Feeding time at 10am was an absolute delight, allowing us to interact with these dangerous but incredible animals and capture delightful moments for our personal and social media feeds. The kids were a little bit afraid to feed the hippos, but they were very impressed to see these amazing creatures up close.
Educational trip at Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands
Our package with Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands included a visit to the Wetlands Arboretum Centre, a place to learn about the flora and fauna of the wetlands. Engaging activities like puzzles and texture-guessing games kept the kids entertained. A tour of the herbal garden added an educational touch, as the children collected local herbs and learned about their uses.
We found Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands Experience a nice adventure for families with children aged 4 and above.
Some tips
Despite the amazing adventure, a minor downside was the briefness of the tour and the variety of wildlife, especially for us traveling from afar. A 45 minutes drive from KLCC might make the experience seem a tad short. To make the most of your journey, consider combining the safari tour with other exciting activities like a boat tour, a visit to the nearby SplashMania water park or Discovery Park.
Be aware of the transportation you use. If you come by Grab taxi, it might be hard to find a car to go back. Consider the possibility of renting a car (if you don’t have one) or arrange transport back in advance.
Useful info
This eco-friendly adventure is open every day except Tuesdays, from 9am till 6pm. The entrance ticket is reasonably priced at RM30 per person, making it an accessible adventure for everyone. We were told that weekends can be pretty busy, so the best time to visit would be during the weekdays.
We were invited by Gamuda Land Leisure. As always, our opinions are honest and our own.
