Cuti-cuti Malaysia (‘Holidays in Malaysia’) applies to long weekends, school holidays or public holidays in Malaysia. This is the time when we discover the truly Malaysia! Have a look at this fun place for the family in Johor. A great place to stop over on your way to (or from) Mersing jetty, if you’re heading for the islands.
Time for a break
We planned our holiday as soon as the school summer holiday started. Both parents and kids needed a break after the home schooling and being homebound since the start of the MCO. We booked a diving trip at Pulau Sibu. The drive from KL to Mersing jetty would take us five hours, so we decided to stay overnight at Kluang. The next day we’d head for the jetty to catch the first boat to the island.
UK Farm, Kluang is about three hours drive from KL. The name ‘UK’ is taken from the owner’s name, not as in ‘United Kingdom’! We booked for one night at the UK Farm. The package included accommodation, full board and farm activities.
Accommodation
We had two connecting rooms for the five of us. One room came with two queen beds and the other with two single beds. The rooms were clean and had air conditioning, a water heater, a coffee maker, TV and a fridge. More than we needed for just one night!
Activities
After we dropped our bags in the room, we went for the mini bus farm tour. There was a guide in the bus for the duration of the tour. Here’s what we did:
- Feedstock processing factory – this is where they process the grass and cut into smaller bits. This makes it easier for the goats to chew and digest, as they only have lower teeth. This type of grass also helps the goats produce more milk.
- Goat pens – this is the place where kids get to do “ooh” and “ahh” with all the cute goats and sheep. They range from baby to adult goat/sheep. You will be able to pat and cuddle the goats. They are very tame and they like to chew on your clothes if they have a chance!
- Milk the goats – you will be able to feed the young goats and sheep with a milk bottle. The young ones are super cute and so eager to drink the milk!! You can have a picture taken with the young animals if you are up for it.
- Goat milk processing centre – the workers demonstrate how to milk goats with a machine. You can also taste some fresh goat milk in various flavours. They also sell goat milk ice cream.
- Duck pond and chicken pen – you can feed the ducks and chicken here. The ducks are in the pond and there is a deck from which you slide the foods through a tube for the ducks.
- Ostrich, deer and rabbit park – there are four resident ostriches here and they look very healthy and tame. You can feed the ostriches and the deer by placing the food on your hand. We couldn’t feed the rabbits, as the guide told us that they are too young and are on a restricted diet. However, we could take the rabbits out for a nice cuddle!
The tour ended at the Tropical Arcade, where we purchased home grown local fruits and fresh coconut juice. We didn’t visit the hydroponic farm and Jakun Village, as it was under renovation.
There are other activities at the farm as well, like horse cart riding and catching goats, which we did not do. We tried the night tour but it is nothing to shout about. I think it depends on your luck to see any animals. We were able to see some fireflies, a civet cat and an unknown animal, that ran off as soon as we approached.
A great stopover
Overall this was an interesting and fun visit and stay for us, as the kids are very happy to be able to interact with the animals. It was also nice to have a rest during a long drive with kids.
We were the only guests, so they cooked some simple yet delicious dinners for us. Breakfast is simple with nasi lemak, eggs and bread with jams. For those who are interested in the tour or an overnight stay, please visit the UK Farm website here.
