Bukit Tinggi makes for a nice enough day trip out of Kuala Lumpur. It is about an hour’s – very windy – drive out of the city. It’s just high enough for the temperature to be a few degrees lower than in the city, making walking around a bit more pleasant.

For us the highlights of Bukit Tinggi are the Japanese garden and rabbits (surprise!). The garden is high up and has steps and paths that are fun to explore with even young kids. This garden with its streams is something I imagined when reading The Garden of Evening Mists –  a book that I warmly recommend. There are koi ponds and you can buy fish food – always a hit with kids. You can even take part in a Japanese tea ceremony or test out a kimono. The Japanese restaurant next to the garden is in a lovely setting with views over the green hills. The food is average and more expensive than in the city, but it is still the nicest place for lunch in the area.

The fake Alpine village is pretty tacky, and has little of interest other than the sheer craziness of it. There are a few restaurants on the main (only) street, small games arcade and a clock tower.

The small Rabbit Farm at the bottom of the hill makes a nice stop on the way back. The rabbits roam free in an enclosure where they can be fed and petted. In busy times they are utterly uninterested but if you get there on a quiet day you’ll have plenty of rabbit friends. There are also other animals like deer, and a small coffee shop.

As with any attraction, weekends and holidays are busy and parking can be a nightmare. Go early and enjoy the beautiful scenery and cool(ish) air. You need to pay an entrance fee upon arrival. There is also a flying fox and a canopy walk but we have not tried them – have you?
