Who needs a fancy party to have a good time? I certainly don’t need a silver fork to enjoy good food. The Afghan lunch experience, hosted at the Greater Action Center in Ampang, is one of a kind!
Greater Action is a non-profit social organisation helping 250 vulnerable refugee families to thrive in a safe environment. Co-founder Julie Das and her team of volunteers are committed to support them and encourage self-reliance through education, health and livelihood opportunities.
One of them is the Afghan lunch, where you can book a lunch for up to 15 pax (table seating or floor seating). You can choose from an array of Afghan traditional dishes (lots of vegetarian options too), all cooked by talented Afghan chefs.

Now, I like food and I like eating. You would have to see it, to believe the sheer amount of edible delights you are served for RM65 per person. We tasted mantu dumplings, pulau rice, spinach chicken curry, bolani stuffed bread, spicy salsa, eggplant and korma dessert.
I felt truly gluttonous. All food is prepared super fresh from scratch, starting the night before to provide the delicious delicacies. There is more than enough to go around, so make sure you arrive hungry! Afghan tea was served throughout our lunch.
All dishes have their own distinct flavouring. Being a person with a relatively low spice tolerance, I can be fussy. There was no call for concern, as I absolutely loved the subtle spices paired with sweetness of raisin and the bolani stuffed bread with potato filling. To be honest, I’m not keen on eggplants, but they were cooked perfectly and so glad I tried them. I might even be converted!

The Greater Action Center is located at No. 1 B, floor 1, Jalan Wawasan 2/8, Bandar Baru, Ampang, Selangor. You can view the location here on Google maps. If you haven’t been there before, it can be slightly challenging to find. Tip: when you are facing the car garage, go the left and up some green stairs. Enjoy your lunch!
