Sweating it all out at the Sweatspa

Did you know that an action as simple as sweating at a sweat spa, can improve your well-being? Why go to a sweat spa, you’d wonder? Isn’t Malaysia already warm enough?

A few years ago, I was going through a challenging phase in my life. I was struggling with sleep deprivation, anxiety, and fluctuating moods. Desperate for a solution, I tried numerous supplements recommended by friends and family, but nothing seemed to work. Exercising also didn’t seem to work.

It was during this time that a close friend suggested I should try out a session at the Sweatspa in Publika. Intrigued by the name, I decided to explore. An innovative concept introduced to Malaysia in 2014 by the affable Ms. Sabrina Tang, an avid advocate of infrared sauna therapy, her Sweatspa company now boasts five outlets in Klang Valley and over 10,000 customers.

How does it work?

Infrared sauna therapy at Sweatspa is not your typical sauna experience. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas utilise advanced technology to directly heat your body cells, to help increase the core temperature from within. This allows everyone to enjoy a more conducive sweating experience, all within a simple 45 minutes session.

Detoxification and pain relief at Sweatspa

Sweating is the body’s natural way of expelling toxins, and infrared sauna therapy enhances this process, leading to a greater sense of well-being. Additionally, it has been found to aid in weight management by increasing metabolism and improving circulation.

Furthermore, infrared sauna therapy offers pain relief by reducing inflammation in the body. It also boosts the immune system, making us more resilient against illnesses. The improved blood circulation resulting from sauna sessions can lead to a rejuvenated complexion and healthier-looking skin.

Moreover, this therapy has been known to improve the quality of sleep, which was particularly appealing to me as I struggled with my sleep patterns.

Let’s try!

After hearing about these significant therapeutic benefits, I decided to give Sweatspa a try. Before my session, I had to undergo a comprehensive evaluation and a thorough analysis of my body composition, muscle fat, and obesity levels.

After that I was escorted to my room where I changed – you have the option to go nude or undress down to your bikini or boxers, and then I finally entered the sauna. Being a Sweatspa sauna newbie, the first session was challenging, and I had to exit the sauna twice just to drink some water. Nowadays I can last the full 45 minutes, although there are times where I have a short water break after 25 minutes.

During the Sweatspa session I usually read to pass the time but there are tv screens in the room, so you could probably also watch a short movie. Apparently, some customers manage to sleep! After the session you are offered a cold towel to cool down and you can dry yourself with the provided towels.

You are advised to wait at least 1-2 hours before taking a shower, to allow your pores to close. If you were to shower immediately, chlorine could enter through the open pores and counteract the detoxifying effects of your session.

Also worth mentioning is that despite sweating, there are no unpleasant odours in the room. This is because the sweat produced during a sweat spa session comes from the eccrine sweat glands, which don’t have the same odour-causing properties as the apocrine glands found in the armpits and groin areas.

Any results after sweating?

I can honestly say that since my very first Sweatspa session, I have noticed a difference. When I sweat, I can feel the tension leaving my body, and a sense of calm coming over me. After each session I feel lighter and seem to have a surge of energy. The consistent sessions at the Sweatspa over time have definitely brought about positive changes in my overall well-being.

My sleep has improved, my anxiety has lessened, and my mood swings have become less frequent. I believe that the infrared sauna therapy at the Sweatspa played a significant role in restoring some balance to my life and sweat spa sessions have now become part of my weekly routine.
