Skillet has been on my ‘restaurant-to-try wish list’ for the longest time (is it just me who has this ever-increasing list?!). We finally headed down on my birthday to taste their Winter Menus back in December 2020.
Stepping into Skillet, it feels really posh and perfect for date nights. It made me rather worried about how they, and their clientele, would take to having a kid in their presence. We did check in advance though that they do cater to kids. Dark colours dominate the interior, with solid black carpeting running throughout the dining area and deep blue banquettes with red one-seaters to complete the look.
Let’s dig in!
My worries disappeared when they welcomed all three of us warmly when we arrived. Since it was my birthday, I, of course, went for the Degustation menu (for we only splurge on these for special occasions) whilst my husband had the Discovery menu. What was on offer on the kids’ menu (carbonara pasta) didn’t pique our son’s interest. We asked if they could do just an adult main course for him instead, to which they happily obliged. A plus point!
The Degustation menu was indulgent. From Miyagi Oyster with Kedondong Granité (I’ve never had a bigger nor fresher oyster ever) to Hokkaido Scallop with Kaluga Queen Caviar and Jerusalem Artichoke to Foie Gras, I was in foodie heaven. My favourite though was the down-to-earth Magic Mushroom Tart with mushroom tea. This is an item which they have retained on their menu since revamping it and rightly so. It was both earthy and briny at the same time. You’d think they’re just mushrooms but at Skillet, they’ve elevated them to an entire new level. I had a hard time letting my husband have a taste, even if it was just a teeny tiny bite.
Mains with flowers
My main course was Cod Fish with Sauce Américaine and Romaine. It was garnished with edible flowers and the romaine was the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Who knew that romaine can be exciting? I was now getting worried about desserts, as I was already quite full. But hey, isn’t that what husbands are for?!
From the Discovery Menu, the prettiest looking item which my husband opted for was the Salmon with Beetroot, Seaweed and Ikura as his second course. It arrived looking like a flower in full bloom. I was glad I wasn’t the one who had to tear it apart!
I didn’t find the desserts very exciting honestly, not like I did their starters and mains. Though I must say, they offered ice cream to our son for dessert as he didn’t have any to choose from (as they don’t have an á la carte menu) and that was super nice of them (kid friendly!). I loved that they came over to explain each dish on both menus when they served it to us.
Children more than welcome!
At restaurant Skillet they’re always happy to have children dine with them. Speaking with the restaurant manager at the end of the meal, I learnt to my surprise that they even have baby chairs available.
The Degustation menu is priced at RM430++ and definitely one for special occasions – you won’t regret it. Whilst the Discovery menu is priced at RM148 for five courses. It’s a great way to get a taste of their offerings. I thought RM148 for five courses is quite reasonable, considering even when ordering á-la carte items from some restaurants, it can come to just as much if not more.
Even better, they also offer a lunch menu at RM75 (two courses) or RM88 (three courses). So, if you’re looking for a venue for date night but can’t find a sitter, bring the kid(s) along and head here!
