Staycation in KL? Yes please. Barbie themed! Say what? A Barbie themed staycation in downtown KL! Oh my goodness, yes, a million times yes! The little girl in me was squealing with excitement, and then I remembered, oops, I had two little girls of my own too, and they would be just as excited as I was.
The husband was less enthusiastic though, I wonder why? Hah! I grew up playing with barbie dolls and now my girls love playing with them too. So, when I was told that Grand Hyatt KL would be having a first of its kind Barbie themed rooms, I knew we were all in for a marvellous time.
Off we go!
We were there during the Christmas period, and after entering the main lobby, we were greeted by the sight of a majestic Christmas tree. Not just any Christmas tree: a Barbie Christmas tree! Think pink bows, pink baubles, barbie dolls and a giant pink star to top it all off. With the Barbie ultimate staycation experience, there is a special check in counter located on a different floor than the normal reception check in. This way, you are able to skip the queues (and there was a long line when we arrived).
After a swift check in process, we were ushered to our room located on the 33rd floor. The moment you step out of the lift, you are transported into Barbie world – the lift lobby was decorated with Barbie dolls aplenty and the lift and room doors all had Barbie prints on them. As if that didn’t get the kids excited enough, the moment they got to the room, squeals of delight ensued.
Barbie heaven
Upon entering the room, I thought I was stepping into Barbie heaven. I was in awe the moment I stepped in. The walls and ceiling were printed with clouds, rainbows and castles, coupled with hot pink Barbie décor everywhere. And to top it all off, you get a magnificent view of the KLCC twin towers right in front of you.
Every room has a theme and the one we got was of mermaids, which my girls absolutely loved. From the Barbie mermaid printed walls to the Barbie doll house to the walk in closet, which has many dress up costumes and accessories for dress up, the girls spent hours playing with everything while the parents happily lazed around on the comfy king sized bed.
I loved all the little touches provided – Barbie toothpaste and toothbrushes, mini bar filled with drinks and snacks for both adults and kids – all complimentary and a kettle and teacups (in pink of course!), should you decide to make yourself a cup of tea or coffee.
The kids loved being in the room so much, they didn’t even want to head out for dinner. We just ordered room service, watched a movie, enjoyed the beautiful night view of the twin towers and called it a night.
Buffet breakfast at Thirty8
Next morning, we headed up to restaurant Thirty8 for the buffet breakfast, which was included in the package. There was a wide selection of food and it definitely didn’t disappoint. From the western section – pastries, egg station (be prepared to wait though), sausages to the asian section – soup noodles, roti canai, nasi lemak, congee, dim sum – there is surely something for everyone.
However, for the girls, the best part were the balloon twisting clowns going around making balloon sculptures for every kid. The balloons sure kept them entertained throughout breakfast.
Afternoon tea at the Barbie Cafe
Now the girls and I were really looking forward to this as well. Located in a glasshouse by the swimming pool, it is the perfect setting for a girly afternoon tea. Everything was decorated to the theme (hot pink and Barbie everywhere of course) and every corner is totally a photo worthy spot, so be sure to come dressed for the occasion!
The afternoon tea set consists of fancy bite sized savoury canapés (think abalone siew mai, wagyu beef Yorkshire pudding, lobster vol-au-vent, smoked salmon mousse cone) and visually and tastefully appealing sweet options like cake pops, scones, macarons and madeleines. You also get to choose a drink each – super yummy milkshakes, juice or tea/coffee.
Personally, I would have preferred to have more savoury options for the kids – most of it were catered to the adults taste buds (though delicious!), but the kids definitely weren’t complaining about all the desserts which were scrumptious.
On top of that, there is a free flow ice cream cart and a pink chocolate fountain station, where you can get fruit skewers and marshmallows dipped in pink chocolate!
We went home on a sugar high. The Barbie Ultimate Staycation was such an amazing experience, to say we had a great stay is truly an understatement. To find out more about it, click here.
Our stay at Grand Hyatt KL was sponsored. As always, our opinions are honest and our own.
