Entering the foyer of Hilton Petaling Jaya is like stepping back in time. I used to come here a lot when I was a kid with my dad. Tonight, we are making our way to the quaint popular Chinese restaurant Toh Yuen, where an 8-course dinner awaits.
As all good Chinese New Year meals should go (especially in Malaysia), we start with a yee sang – a multi-coloured dish complete with Norwegian smoked salmon and pomelo, designed to bring abundance to the eaters. As we toss the crunchy sweet sour plate higher and higher we are shouting positive words like “lo hei“!
Next up is the Fatt Choy Four Combination: a multi-tiered dish with a prawn cocktail, a fruit salad with dragon fruit and melon, succulent crab pork dumpling (siew mai style), spicy kung pao cashew chicken and a crunchy fried sweet tofu skin with prawn and fish filling.
The 3rd and 4th dishes were an eggy crab soup with sea cucumber and orange chewy bits and a juicy almond butter chicken. The 5th and 6th dishes were a super fresh and flaky red snapper with superior soya sauce, followed by fresh firm orange sauce prawn.
Up next was a broccoli mushroom fuchuk sprinkled with goji berries and after that we were treated on Glutinous Rice with Dried Mussel, Scallop and Salted Egg wrapped in Lotus Leaf, being wrapped glutinous rice with mussels and egg yolk. Eaten with spring onions and green chili this dish was surprisingly yummy. Despite how full I already was, I truly enjoyed this dish.
We finish our culinary feast with a delicious cold ‘tong sui’ dessert soup with strawberry slices and longan, accompanied by rice balls with roasted sesame seeds. This dish was called Chilled Longan and Lychee with Strawberries & Fried Nian Gao with Sesame Seeds.
Overall it was a very pleasant evening out at Hilton Petaling Jaya. Do get in touch with the restaurant if you would like to organise your reunion dinner there, especially if you want to book a private room that can seat up to 10 or 20.
