Having lived in London for a couple of years, my husband and I are no strangers to the ‘Sunday roast’ tradition. To those that are not aware, a Sunday Roast is traditionally a large joint of meat, be it roast beef, lamb, pork or chicken served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables with a lovely helping of gravy and is normally enjoyed on Sundays at the pub or restaurant with family and friends.
After moving back to KL, it was hard to find places that served Sunday roast, so when we heard that The Ritz-Carlton KL had a Sunday Roast buffet, we knew we had to check it out. We even brought the kids along as we wanted them to experience this British tradition!
A Ritzy affair
Held at the Library, on the 1st floor of The Ritz-Carlton KL, it is a lovely intimate space that is cosy and inviting and a joy to spend time in. I was worried the setting would be too ‘posh’ to have the kids along, but the staff were so welcoming and made us all feel at home. Outside the Library is a lounge area where a three-piece jazz band provides live entertainment and sets just the right mood for you to enjoy your leisurely lunch. The jazz band even entertained the kids by playing a few kids songs for them!
Spoilt for choices
Upon arrival, guests are served a welcome drink, a cheeky Bloody Mary that really invigorates your taste buds so you can start “attacking” the food right away. While a traditional English Sunday roast is the main theme of The Library’s buffet, the other selections of food on offer are a sight to behold as well. The buffet spread is indulgent and these were some of the varieties we had on the day:
- Seafood section – fresh oysters, mussels, clams, octopus and prawns served alongside a good selection of condiments.
- Sashimi and sushi – loved the salmon sashimi. Keyword: fresh, fresh, fresh!
- The main star of the show, the Sunday roast – tender and succulent roast beef and roast leg of lamb, and staying true to British traditions – served with roasted potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. The roast is one of the best I’ve had in KL. One bite in and it took me back to the UK instantly.
- Other heartier fares – from roast chicken to salmon en croute with dill veloute to a lovely selection of sausages. I with they had mash available so I could create my own bangers and mash with the sausages and gravy from the Sunday roast trolley!
- Healthy salads and antipasti– a great variety of salads and antipasti to balance out all the “heavy” stuff. I particularly enjoyed the DIY Caesar salad which you mix in a parmesan wheel.
- Desserts – from mouthwatering macarons, madeleines and crème brulee to fine cakes and chocolate pralines, desserts are definitely worth saving some stomach space for.
- Cheese section – if you wanted to end on a savoury note then the cheese selection will not disappoint.
Good to know
The Sunday Roast is served between 12pm and 3pm every Sunday at the Library. It is priced at RM198++ per adult, RM99++ child (7 – 12 years old) or RM398++ per adult with unlimited pouring of Prosecco, wine and beer. It is best to book ahead.
Overall, Sunday Roast at the Library really captures the quintessentially British dining experience but done to a very high standard; it is the Ritz-Carlton after all! So do expect high-quality comfort food with a very classy touch. Our whole family (including the young ones) enjoyed the food throughly and had a lovely experience.
