In a few months, celebrations will start for the Mid-Autumn Festival, the second most important Chinese Festival after Chinese New Year.
This year the festival, also called Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, falls on Friday 29 September and family members will join for reunion dinners, hold ceremonies praying for health and happiness and gaze at a bright moon together whilst sharing a piece of plump mooncake!
In anticipation of these celebrations, Hilton Kuala Lumpur has launched its premium Mid-Autumn mooncake collection called ‘Luminous Treasures’ and we were invited to have a first peek at these delicacies.
Each year, Hilton prepares a festive collection of delicious packages, including both traditional baked mooncakes, as well as the snow skin varieties that are beautifully presented and ready to be gifted to your loved ones. The ‘Luminous Treasures’ box this year involves a carefully crafted bamboo box with a colourful and symbolic depiction of cascading ocean waves under a bright round moon. It includes four mooncakes of your choosing and a tea set for two.
How to choose…?
What flavours to choose from? The traditional mooncakes come in a few classic flavours such as white lotus paste, lotus paste or pandan paste with single yolk and red bean paste with almond flakes. There is also the yam lotus paste and black sesame lotus with single yolk and the five nuts version. They are not too sweet and have a perfect bite to them with smooth and velvety paste fillings. My favourite flavours were the pandan and yam ones, with a hint of citrus in the five nuts mooncake.
The artisanal snow skin varieties include a few signature flavours, such as ‘Blue Moon’ filled with Amaretto lotus paste and blueberry cheese feuillantine and the ‘Flower Drum’ with lotus paste and soft custard egg yolk.
This year’s newly developed flavours were the ‘Chocolate Crescent’ with locally produced chocolate and macademia nuts, and the surprisingly sweet savoury ‘Ember Jade’, which has a very Malaysian twist to it. It is made with pandan lotus paste and a delicious crunchy sambal and XO sauce filling! For me, this is where Malay kuih meets mooncake and you get the best of both. I quite enjoyed this last one, as I am a fan of tom yam type of flavours. The other snow skin versions were too sweet for my taste.
Hurray for the durian mooncake!
At this point, I was eating even smaller bits of the mooncakes, as I was trying to leave some space for the smelly star of the evening: the highly anticipated Supermoon jumbo durian mooncake with fleshy pieces of juicy Premium Musang King. A bite of this gold dust sprinkled snow skin mooncake was certainly a treat and it tasted as satisfying as it looked. This impressive one-kilogram heavy mooncake can serve up to 10 people.
