Because I love my pastries and coffee, I am always on the lookout for nice cafes to try. So when I was invited to check out BlackBixon café in downtown KL, I couldn’t wait to see what was on offer!
Situated along Jalan Inai (just off Jalan Imbi), the site was formerly an old bungalow, but is now transformed into a two storey café and rooftop bar set over 5200 square feet. There are also two beautiful glasshouses built on two sides of the main entrance. Perfect for events, as there is ample space and plenty of natural light. If you are worried about parking, fret not because there is free parking for guests in the open air car park situated opposite the café.
The drinks
BlackBixon pride themselves in their coffee. They use pure arabica beans and for coffee aficionados, you know this means serious business. There are plenty of drinks choices – all sorts of coffees, teas, juices and kombuchas. However, there are two BlackBixon specialties – the Monochrome which is a latte crafted with charcoal powder and combined with vanilla and salted caramel and the Tropicalxon, an espresso combined with coconut water, passion fruit and soda – both of which are served cold, and both equally delicious! Definitely worth a try.
The pastries
Now moving on to the pastries, my oh my. We had the almond croissant, kouign amann, charcoal salted egg yolk croissant, pesto ham and cheese Danish and cheesy tomato swirl. My tastebuds were jumping for joy after every bite and I was in pastry heaven! Every pastry was buttery and flaky, and the textures were so on point!
The charcoal salted egg croissant deserves a special shout out, as the filling was generous and there was a nice chilli kick to it. I also enjoyed the pesto ham and cheese Danish very much, as the pesto was really fragrant and it balanced out really well with the ham and cheese. The pastries are made fresh daily in house and they do not keep any leftovers for the next day, to ensure the quality of the pastries.
Special tip: go after 5 pm and every pastry is 50% off, but be quick as everything gets sold pretty quick!
The hot food
Besides pastries, the café also serves hot breakfast and brunch food, pastas, burgers and schnitzels. I rarely find places in KL serving schnitzels, so I was pretty excited to see it on the menu, what more having the option to choose between chicken, lamb and beef. We tried the chicken and lamb schnitzel and they were both very tender. I really enjoyed the sauces that accompanied it – green salsa and sriracha mayo, both super tasty!
We also had the soft shell crab burger, which was nice and juicy. There are vegetarian options, one of which is the pesto gnocchi served with crumbed portobello mushroom. I am generally not a huge fan of gnocchi, but I did like the pesto flavour! For pasta lovers, do give the chilli soft shell crab pasta a go, as the squid ink tagliolini is made in house. Their aglio olio is also something different, as it is served with smoked duck.
The rooftop bar
If you are around the area in the evening, definitely head to the rooftop bar for drinks. They serve alcoholic drinks and bar snacks from 5pm onwards – perfect for those after work drinks! You also get a lovely view of the new TRX tower (great photo op).
That afternoon, I went back home with a tummy filled with good food, and I couldn’t stop thinking about those delicious buttery pastries. I’ll definitely be back for more!
BlackBixon café is open every day from 8am – 10pm. More about BlackBixon café here.
