For our Chinese New Year tasting at Toh Yuen in Hilton Petaling Jaya, we were served a mixture from the Golden Fortune and the Abundant Wealth reunion sets, which worked a treat for us as we got to taste the best from both the menus.
As with any Chinese New Year meal, we kicked off with a Yee Sang. The Hokkaido Scallops and Silver Fish with Auspicious Fruit Yee Sang from the Abundant Wealth menu at Toh Yuen, included dragon fruit, strawberries, and kiwis, which gave the Yee Sang a twist and was refreshingly different from the norm. Although the salad leaves in the Yee Sang was a big no from me.

Next up was the Braised Hokkaido Dried Scallop and Crab Meat Broth with Fish Maw from the Golden Fortune menu. This soup was thick, chewy, and gelatinous – absolute yums and a great start to the evening meal.
As with any Chinese New Year meal, fish is a must as it represents abundance and prosperity. We had the Steamed France Turbot with Dried Orange Peel and Ginger from Toh Yuen’s Abundant Wealth menu, and this was definitely a hit. The fish was fresh, the flesh was tender, and along with the sauce, worked a treat. Apparently, the fish is flown in directly from France!

After the fish, we had the Roasted Cherry Valley Duck with Braised Mustard Greens and Peanuts from the Abundant Wealth menu. This was certainly a new way of serving duck – to most of us at the table. The roasted duck was served up upon a thick layer of gravy, which is apparently a Hakka style according to Toh Yuen’s Chef Dexter, who hails from Tawau, Sabah and is Cantonese. He certainly knows his food as he’s been in the industry for 20 years!
The braised mustard greens and peanuts reminded me of the topping that I would pick to go along with porridge and this brought back memories of dishes made by my grandma. Memories like these are always welcomed and like a warm embrace, which I truly appreciated. Having said that, I found the duck meat slightly too tough to chew though.

I found the Pan-Fried Tiger Prawns with Honey Soy Sauce and Pickled Ginger quite standard. Whilst the Braised Sea Cucumber and Dried Oyster Bean Curd Roll with Seasonal Vegetables was a winner for me. Both of these are from the Golden Fortune menu.
Also from the Golden Fortune menu was the Fried Glutinous Rice with Cantonese Cured Meat wrapped with Lotus Leaf. The rice was fragrant and I really liked this dish but by this time, I was already quite stuffed and didn’t couldn’t finish my portion. Plus, there was still dessert to be had!

We were served Chilled Snow Nest with Water Chestnut and Longan, and Steamed Pandan Rice Cake with Grated Coconut accompanied with Purple Potato Egg Yolk Lava Ball from the Abundant Wealth menu. The chilled snow nest was refreshing and just sweet enough (which is always welcomed and so rare), whilst the rice cake was a delight as it was pandan flavoured (first time for us) – this was achieved by blending pandan juice into the nian gao. The lava ball was crispy and fluffy at the same time. I was just happy that I did leave room for desserts as this final course was magnificent!
