It starts like any other Sunday morning. You sip your coffee, the kids are already bouncing off the walls, and you’re wondering how to keep them entertained without resorting to yet another screen.
Then, you remember: The French Book Fair is back! A day of books, culture, and—this year—a wild journey through the animals of Malaysia. Curious orangutans, slithering pythons, and majestic tigers await… all within the walls of the Alliance Française of Kuala Lumpur.
You grab the kids, take a little cash, pile into the car, and off you go.
A world of books and stories
The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the smell of fresh pages and the hum of excited chatter. Over 26 French-speaking authors have gathered here from all around the world, ready to sign books, share stories, and transport you to faraway lands.

The little one tugs on your sleeve—there’s a theatrical show about to start! The actors bring a beloved children’s book to life, and as the kids giggle and gasp, you realize: they’re absorbing French without even trying.
Meanwhile, your teenager, who claimed to be “so not into books,” is suddenly deep in conversation with an author whose novel was adapted into a French TV hit. Who knew book fairs could be… cool?
Hands-on fun for all ages
Just as you’re about to sneak off for a quiet browse, the kids drag you to the creative workshops. Origami, manga drawing, even a session on Chinese calligraphy—it’s hands-on, messy fun, and for once, no one is complaining about being bored.

Then comes the unexpected highlight: a special workshop on managing Malaysia’s mischievous monkeys. The kids are wide-eyed as they learn why these cheeky creatures swipe food (hint: it’s not just for fun), and you make a mental note to finally stop leaving snacks in the stroller at the park.
A celebration of art and culture

Wandering through the venue, you stumble upon a stunning photography exhibition. Next to it, a small stage where three young poets are nervously waiting—soon, they’ll be awarded the Prix Pantoun Sayang for their original French “pantouns”. The audience is captivated, and you find yourself quietly impressed by the talent hidden in KL’s classrooms.
Then, the rhythmic sound of drums calls you outside. A Mah Meri cultural performance is starting. You watch, mesmerised, as members of this indigenous Orang Asli community showcase their traditional wood carving, intricate folding techniques, and even the hypnotic tunes of the nasal flute. The kids try their hand at the puzzles, and for a moment, screens are completely forgotten.
Books, baguettes, and a bit of bubbly at the French Book Fair
By now, everyone’s worked up an appetite, and luckily, Paul’s pastries and sandwiches are ready to save the day. You grab a flaky croissant and—oh, what’s this? A complimentary glass of Minuty rosé wine for the adults? You sip, exhale, and realize: this is your kind of Sunday.
Just when you think it can’t get any better, an announcement rings out: time for the lucky draw! A hush falls as names are called. Could you be the one winning a dream getaway to Club Med? The suspense is real.
A Sunday well spent
As the day winds down and you finally gather your book-filled bags, the kids are still buzzing. They’ve met authors, played games, and—without even realizing it—practiced their French.
And for those who do not speak a word of French, no worries: workshops and some conferences will be in held English or do not need any special French language skill to be followed.
And you? You’ve just spent a Sunday that was equal parts educational, cultural, and fun.
So next time someone asks what there is to do in KL, you’ll know exactly what to tell them: don’t miss the French Book Fair.
