Shangri-La KL celebrates local heroes with Village Park collaboration

Nasi lemak needs no introduction. It is truly at the top of the list in terms of Malaysian heritage food, and is one of Malaysia’s most treasured dishes.

Every Malaysian, and even expats and tourists love nasi lemak. Rice cooked in coconut milk, plus sambal, fried anchovies, fried peanuts, half a hard-boiled egg, and cucumber slices, along with either curry or fried chicken, does a complete meal make.

For those not in the know, Village Park has been in the nasi lemak game for 25 years and counting. Dato’ Seri Mohd Shamil Ngoh Abdullah built the brand from scratch, perfected it after some trial and error, and still goes in daily to cook, and oversee operations. It is most famous for its Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah (spiced fried chicken).

Village Park sells a whopping 10,000 fried whole chicken legs every single day, and this is a testament to Village Park’s fame and popularity – Malaysians do love their fried chicken and the coconut rice to go along with it. It is no wonder that Village Park has become synonymous with every true-blue Malaysian, who’s looking for great nasi lemak as Village Park has always been about consistency in its quality.

Village Park in the heart of KL

As Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur is the first five-star luxury hotel to be recognised and certified by the Department of National Heritage Malaysia for championing authentic Malaysian Heritage Cuisine in 2025, it has set-up a collaboration with Village Park to offer up Village Park’s famed nasi lemak at its Lobby Lounge for a limited time period.

If you’re concerned about a drop in quality as it’s not being served up at Village Park’s outlet – don’t be. I can attest to the fact that the quality was not compromised at all. In fact, I had the best Village Park nasi lemak ever as it was served piping hot to each of us at the launch. Clearly, I am one who does not have the patience to queue for food, and have always either Grab-ed it or had a friend take-away for me.

To ensure the same quality you would get at Village Park, Dato’ Seri Mohd Shamil Ngoh Abdullad oversaw the set-up and the kitchen at Shangri-La KL, and the prep work before giving the go-ahead to the collaboration. Details like the sizing of the cucumber slices, to the measurement of the banana leaves that were used, were checked personally by Dato’ Seri. (Shangri-La KL had to send the plates the nasi lemak were being served on to Village Park so that Dato’ Seri could make sure that the banana leaves were cut to fit just right – now, that’s attention to detail!).

This is definitely one for KL folks who can’t get down to Village Park’s location in PJ, to savour its nasi lemak in the heart of town. Or for folks who are put off by the line at the outlet – like me!

Running daily from 15 to 28 January 2026, from 11:30am to 3:00pm, the Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah is priced at RM25 nett and comes with a Nescafe Tarik, Teh Tarik or Kopi Tarik, making it a true Malaysian meal.

I applaud Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur for taking such an initiative where they promote our local heroes and homegrown brands. There are so many local institutions out there and as a born and bred Malaysian, it always warms the cockles of my heart when they’re celebrated!
