With so many amazing Ramadan buffets to choose in Kuala Lumpur, making a choice isn’t easy – or is it? After attending several media previews in recent weeks (as my tightening pants can attest), I’ve had plenty of food – and insight – to compare. And without a doubt, the Sajian Istana Ramadan buffet Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur takes one of the top spots in the list of best buffets in town.
A royal buffet

A feast fit for royalty on offer this Ramadan with Sajian Istana at JP Teres, Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Inspired by the rich culinary traditions of Malay palaces, the lavish buffet showcases an amazing spread of dishes.
Right at the entrance of the restaurant, guests were welcomed by a gamelan orchestra, accompanied by two beautifully dressed female dancers. A very nice touch and adding to the majestic vibes of the evening. Be careful when entering the restaurant – two imposing guards stand watch, gripping sharp spears. No doubt, the spears are purely decorative, as the staff are exceptionally warm and welcoming. They are well-versed in the menu and happy to answer any questions about the food.
Traditional cuisine from the Malay palaces

Sajian Istana translates to “Palace Dish” and refers to traditional cuisine typically served in royal palaces for special occasions. For the occasion, JP Teres is dressed up with decorations resembling a royal palace. Adding to the experience are the cosy dining booths, beautifully decorated with comfortable pillows. You can opt to sit either inside in the air-conditioned space, or outside, where the atmosphere is more lively and resembles a bazaar.
This buffet may not offer as many dishes as some other places, but it quickly became clear why – the selections at JP Teres are lesser-known, yet absolutely phenomenal. What to think of squid stuffed with sweet rice, quail eggs in coconut curry or murtabak kambing (goat murtabak)? Or the delicious Iga Bakar Bali (beef short ribs) and the satay – both favourites of my plus one, who loves his meats. As for me, the dish with the massive prawns stole the show – flavourful, fresh, and absolutely satisfying. I didn’t mind the mess one bit.
Ending on a sweet note

Normally I am quite a dessert person, but I have to say that some of the desserts at the Sajian Istana Ramadan buffet lean a bit too much on the sugary side, and being a bit overwhelming took the shine away from the traditional taste. A few traditional treats stood out though like the banoffee date pudding, the tasty baklava with its crunchy outside and more softer inner and the bread pudding. Still, a grand finale to an otherwise very impressive buffet.
The Sajian Istana buffet is priced at RM248 nett per adult and RM124 nett per child. It will be available from March 3 – 30 2025, from 6.30pm – 10.30pm.
