In the shadows of Mid Valley Megamall, near the Thean Hou temple, you will find restaurant Siu Siu. Tucked away in a green lane just off Jalan Syed Putra, you can barely see the place, except for its rather large ‘Heineken’ sign. Established and well known restaurant Siu Siu is quite hidden in the bush and that’s part of its beauty.
With its wide-open space and bird sounds coming from a few cages next to the restaurant, it’s hard to imagine that you’re only ten minutes away from KLCC. The greenery around Siu Siu adds to that feeling.
After they’d reopened last month for ‘fully vaccinated 2 jabs’ customers, I started to take my father for lunch here again. We used to come here at least twice a month throughout the week. Recently, we went on a Friday at 12pm and it was reasonably quiet. I can imagine though that it fills up quickly over the weekend.
Let’s order!
We felt particularly hungry and thirsty. First up on the table was a large bottle of beer. My dad and I like to share, so along came two ice-cold glasses straight from the freezer. Nothing better than a sip of sparkling cold beer to get even more appetite for food.
Spoiler alert: there is no menu! Just a few images on the walls and lots of writing next to it in Chinese. The staff is very willing to help you out and they offer suggestions, which never fail to disappoint. Still, ‘lost in translation’ is also on the menu, so don’t be surprised to end up with something different than what you expected. But hey, nothing wrong with a sense of adventure, to add to the experience!
For our lunch today we chose some claypot prawn curry (creamy, tangy and spicy), their signature dish char siu (sticky, sweet, soft and a bit too much fat for my liking, but super tasty), tofu with mince and spring onions, kailan, and fried rice. Such a shame our bellies are only of human size proportions. Otherwise, we also would have ordered their chilli crab with fried buns, salted egg prawns and steamed tilapia fish covered in fine slivers of ginger, spring onions and coriander. Next time lah!
Not the Ritz…
Restaurant Siu Siu is not a five star diner. The red plastic tables have got ‘matching’ orange serving plates, and service comes not always with a happy face… Siu Siu’s staff is very attentive though and the fact that they are not smothering you in smiles does not matter for us. It’s the food we eat here, not the staff.
If you’re ok with all this and want to enjoy some truly special and delicious Chinese food for a reasonable price, Siu Siu is your place. It’s great to take the family here for lunch or dinner. One note: the toilets could do with an upgrade.
There are a few places where I always confidently leave a tip. Siu Siu is absolutely one of them. With a tummy full of delicious food, we left. Time for an after-lunch nap!
If you’re here for lunch, you could take the kids afterwards to the nearby Thean Hou temple. More here in our review about this place.
Restaurant Siu Siu is located at No 15-11, Lorong Syed Putra Kiri, Seputeh. They’re open seven days a week, from 11am – 10pm. Parking is easy and for free, on the big parking space opposite the restaurant. There is a sister restaurant in Sungai Besi, which is apparently equally good. More info here on their FB page.
