Are you looking for a grand feast to break your fast, or to experience amazing dishes during Ramadan? You’ve found it! Restaurant Contango at Majestic Hotel KL has an amazing buffet going on, with two kitchens where the chefs are cooking up a storm.
Chef Hossein Karimi, from Persia, is in charge of Contango’s kitchens for the whole month. He’s putting together a special feast that shows off the rich tastes of his homeland, like the Herby Rice and Sabzi Koo Koo (an egg and vegetables based dish) from the country’s north, to salads from the east.
Incredible flavours from Persia
We had a chat with Chef Hossein about the Persian dishes in the buffet, and he emphasized the importance of using high quality ingredients only, like saffron, rose water, and pistachio. We certainly tasted it in his creations! Our favourite in this section of the buffet was hands down Chef Hossein’s signature kebab as well as the regal Barberry Pistachio Saffron Rice. Every mouthful was bursting with flavour; I could eat this every day.
Let’s explore the buffet at Contango, Majestic Hotel KL
My plus one and I were tempted to hang around the Persian section only, but there was much more to sample, hence we moved on to the Japanese section, where super fresh sashimi and sushi soon decorated our plates. There were over a hundred traditional Malay dishes from all over Malaysia, like rendang, kerabu and nasi lemak.
In the Malay food section, the fried Udang galah Sungai Perak was my favourite dish and I think the chef was aware of my presence as I lingered nearby, eagerly anticipating the next batch to be served. My plus one was raving about the chicken murtabak and she said the vegetable version was delicious as well.
Up next was a station, where a whole roasted lamb leg was waiting for us. The meat was how it should be: succulent and flavourful. On to the next station, where I sampled some of the kerabu. Malaysia kerabu is made with fresh vegetables and zesty dressings that are usually served with rice. By themselves they’re tasty as well and rather healthy I’d say. I liked the kerabu pucuk paku (fern salad) in particular. Saying that, the kerabu ikan bilis dengan tempe (dried fish and baked fermented soybeans) was equally delicious.
Did we have room for deserts? Oh yes… A buffet is not complete without passing by the sweet corner. My personal favourite here was the tapai ubi (fermented tapioca), whereas my plus one pointed me to the special ice-creams as must-try desserts. The pandan cream brulée deserves a special mention as well.
Attempting to capture the essence of the buffet through mere words proved to be a challenge. Words like ‘delicious,’ ‘sumptuous,’ and ‘fabulous’ simply don’t do justice to the variety of food, the quality of it, and the ambiance. If I could give the buffet at Contango, Majestic Hotel KL a 11 out of 10, I would!
