The season on the East Coast has started so we decided to embark on a tropical adventure to Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa. It’s a scenic five-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut, and once you arrive at the Fairfield hotel jetty, the resort’s private ferry awaits. Glide comfortably across the lovely turquoise waters for 45 minutes and Perhentian Island will emerge on the horizon, Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa peeking through the tropical foliage.
Upon arrival the friendly staff greet you, and buggies zip you to the resort’s grand entrance for check in.

Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa: our thoughts

First impressions? Perhentian Marrriott Resort & Spa is grand, modern, and spacious, with light flooding every corner. Its concrete-heavy design feels a bit imposing for a small island, but comfort is undeniable.
Rooms are nice – stylish, spacious, with plush beds and gorgeous views. The bathroom especially shines with sleek fixtures and a Japanese toilet, adding a luxe touch.
Unfortunately there is no direct beach access, and the two small beaches are reachable only via steps so not ideal for people with mobility issues. My favourite, the Romantic Beach, is a trek down 250 steps, offering serenity but no deck chairs or facilities so don’t forget to bring your own gear!
The other beach – Tranquility – offers kayak and canoe rentals, perfect for water adventures.

Facilities at Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa cater to all. The gym is top-notch, and three pools (lap, family, and children’s) keep everyone happy.

The Kids’ Club looked fun and colourful, with activities galore, and there is a nice lounge for teenagers too. For the adults there is a daily schedule as well with activities such as yoga, batik painting or making cocktails.

For those wanting a bit of pampering, the Qi Forest Spa & Wellness is a haven of tranquility, offering a diverse array of treatments to nurture body and soul.
Dining includes an all-day restaurant Dapur, and Sekoci, open for lunch and dinner barbecue.
The food is decent, not spectacular, but portions are generous. We opted for a half-board package, and the sheer volume of food was impressive. For variety, you can stroll out of the hotel to the nearby beach or cross the island to Long Beach, home to the lively Bubu Long Beach Resort.

Service is pleasant, with staff eager to please, though occasional mix-ups happen – those however are always smoothed over with warm smiles.
The Diving Centre is a standout, run by friendly, professional South African and local staff. The diving experience was fantastic, with vibrant marine life and well-organised trips.
There is a bar/lounge near the check-in counter but lacks a cosy vibe, feeling more functional than inviting. Alcohol is very, very expensive so you have been warned!
Overall, the Marriott Perhentian Resort & Spa is a polished resort ideal for families and activity-seekers, though its modern design slightly overshadows the island’s natural charm. Bring your sense of adventure, and you’ll find plenty to enjoy – especially if diving, snorkelling or poolside lounging is your thing.
