Ramadan is around the corner! Coming up are fantastic food morsels to tantalise the taste buds. Eateries will be outdoing one another, having a huge variety of food specials. We were invited by Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur for their Ramadan buffet this year at Swez Brasserie.
What are the favourites at Swez Brasserie?
Apparently, the restaurant is well known for their 5-hour boiled ox soup, called Gear Box Soup. With lots of spices and very flavourful, we thought this was a great starter. Tip: dip some bread in to enjoy the full flavour of the ox soup.
We then headed to the delectable black pepper lamb served with fragrant yellow biriyani rice and some sambal chili, to give it an Asian twist.
After this feast, we were heading for the other favourite, Ayam Penyet Capai Hijau – crispy chicken smashed soft and smothered with a freshly mixed green chili concoction mixed with sugar and spices. We had this together with the nasi ulam and it was mouth-watering.
The signature dish: Beef Brisket Rendang
As always, the buffet was a meat lovers delight, but there was plenty of ulam (Malay salad) for those wanting some vegetables and interestingly, some steamed asparagus with chili sambal on top. We also had some lemang, which was steamed to perfection, gulai ayam kampung (chicken curry) which was juicy and flavoured with lots of spices and the signature Beef Brisket Rendang was nice and tender, with a superb melange of spices.
Thumbs up for desserts
To cool down the mouth and trying to tame all those flavours, we headed for desserts, which did not disappoint. Perfect little cups of ginger crème brûlée with a hint of mint, pink sago gula Melaka with jackfruit (so yum), super creamy date cheesecake with slivered crunchy almonds on top and something unusual: durian flavoured pandan apam balik, which was quite a delightful find.
They will have many more stations during Ramadan, including a Japanese one with deep fried maki and ramen, which was apparently very popular last year. In total, there will be 18 stalls and more than 100 dishes to sample.
These huge buffets often have leftovers, but the General Manager of Eastin Hotel assured me that they would limit them this year. They also may procure the services of The Lost Food Project to connect Eastin Hotel with a local charity nearby. Great news! Read more here about The Lost Food Project.
In the end I left with a very full spicy tummy and a sweet taste in my mouth. Thank you Eastin!
