Yes, you read that right – I had only 24 hours in George Town, and I was determined to make the most of it! The amazing island of Penang has got so much to offer. From the white sandy beaches in the north, to the hills and the kampung life in the south, there is plenty to see, do and experience. And then of course, there is beautiful George Town. A paradise for food lovers, where time stands still in front of stunning street facades, and streets filled with mural arts. If you’re just passing through, or simply just want to sample the vibe of George Town, take a look at what’s buzzing lately in this UNESCO listed heritage town!
Let’s go!
8am – arrival at Penang International Airport. With only carry-on luggage to worry about, grabbing a Grab is easy, taking me straight to the charming Yeng Keng Hotel on Chulia Street in George Town. Originally built in the 19th century as an Anglo-Indian bungalow, it later became a lodging house before its restoration in 2009 as a boutique heritage hotel. My room is not ready yet at this early hour, so I decide to leave my luggage and go for a stroll.

9.30am – few places are open yet, but almost by chance, my feet lead me to China House at 153, Beach Street. This place consists of three heritage buildings, linked by an open air courtyard and converted into an art shop, a café and bar, a restaurant, and galleries, with live music and a bakery. I remember the cappuccinos here being more than decent – just like the cakes. It’s quiet, and the cakes on display are eyeing me with eager anticipation. I ask them to behave, but to no avail. Oh, how easily I surrender, indulging in my favourite: burnt cheesecake with macadamias. Wickedly delicious!

11am – satisfied but eager to burn some calories, I leave China House and move toward Armenian Street, where it’s always a joy to wander through Umbrella Alley with its vibrant umbrellas floating overhead and its murals adding fun to the experience.
1pm – still enjoying the vibrant energy of George Town’s streets, I take my chances and dive into the menu at Pitaya by Juice Code, a warm, Bali-themed haven at 235, Lebuh Chulia. An intriguing name for a fantastic spot that is all about vegan and vegetarian options. I opt for the Buddha Bowl, a healthy lunch option that combines greens, quinoa, grilled tofu, beetroot hummus and walnuts. Definitely recommended!
After lunch, drowsiness sets in, and I head back to the hotel, where I find my beautifully decorated room waiting. It features a cosy bed, a small yet well-equipped bathroom, and a view overlooking a small square. Tip: ask for a room at the back of the place, since noises from busy Chulia Street may travel up to the rooms at the front of the hotel.
Evening vibes
5pm – it is cocktail time and no better place to go to then Mish Mash at 24 Jalan Muntri, around the corner from Yeng Keng Hotel. If you haven’t been to this place yet: they’re known for their crafted cocktails, and relaxed speakeasy vibe. New on the menu are a few wonderful snack options. Who’d know that crunchy Brussels Sprouts would go so well together with ice-cold beer or a Moskow Mule?

7pm – head to Kimberley Street while it is still a little bit light and have a look at all the food options. As always, deciding where to eat is challenging. Easiest is just to sit down somewhere and order from the different places. Being a fan of lok-lok – which means ‘to dip’ in Hokkien – I head to the cart first to choose a few nice-looking skewers with vegetables and meat. After that, I order char kuey teow and satay from two other stalls nearby for very reasonable prices. Satisfied, I head back for a good night’s sleep.
The next morning
6am – The following morning nice and early at 6am allows for a peaceful 10-minute walk from the hotel to the jetties. There is no sight more breathtaking than watching the sun gently awaken the world. Beginning at Tan Jetty, you can sit by the red temple at the far end and take in the beauty of the sunrise. Afterward, have a stroll toward the other jetties. Note that Chew Jetty only opens at 9am, but the nearby Indian food stalls in Little India and along Beach Street are already serving breakfast.

As it is time to return to the hotel, pack up, and head to the airport. Until next time, George Town!
