Last Christmas we got a suggestion of posting about ways of spreading the goodwill so this year we collected a list of charities that are in need of donations – whether it be money, clothes, food or your time. The charities and NGOs listed have been referred to us by friends – we are not familiar with all of their work. For further into, contact the organisations directly! Lighthouse Childrens’ Welfare Home
The home in Bangsar offers vulnerable children a safe place where they can get away from their difficult backgrounds. The home is run by Mr and Mrs Steven and the focus is in bringing the children up in a loving, family focused environment among brothers and sisters of different ages ranging from 2 to 20. NTF (Need to Feed the Need)
The NTF is a community initiative to help the homeless and urban poor. Most of the able bodied have jobs but salaries are so low they can’t afford deposits for rental so end up paying a daily rate of 25 to 40 rm for a squalid room or living in tiny makeshift rooms in converted shop houses. Providing meals and other basic essentials helps them to get by. NTF operates from Medan Tuanku Feeding centre, that has facilities such as washrooms, medical room, prayer room and and washing machines/dryers. YCK is a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre, providing meals, activities, therapy, case management and education programmes for the at risk children of Chow Kit. They also have a safe house for the most at risk cases, to keep vulnerable and abused children protected and away from their abusers. ANGSANAcare is a NGO providing an unique set of services to underprivileged pediatric palliative care patients and their families in the Pediatric Institute of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (IPHKL). ANGSANAcare is the only NGO in Malaysia that utilises music, art and play therapy to help children and their families cope with the physical pain and emotional stress of terminal illness. MSRI
The Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI) is an NGO established in 1959. Its SAHABAT Support Centre (SSC) provides services to urban refugees: a school and other educational programmes, health care and support in meeting the basic needs. Financial support is needed to purchase food and/or food vouchers to families in dire need. Donors are also sought for the Adopt a Family programme that matches impoverished refugee families living in KL with individual or group sponsors to provide the family with regular support.

Agathians Shelter is a registered welfare home and orphanage, housing 40 boys who are either orphans, abandoned and/or from single parent or broken families. Help is needed to raise funds for school expenses, utility bills, food cost to maintain a balanced diet for the kids, as well as household items.

Kechara Soup Kitchen is an NGO that provides hot vegetarian food, medical aid, counseling and job placements to the poor and homeless in KL, Penang and Johor. They also provide groceries to urban poor families. They always welcomes donations, in cash or kind, and volunteers.

Shepherd’s Centre Foundation
Shepherd’s Centre Education is a foster home that caters for orphans and underprivileged children. PDK Cenwaey Penaney – Cenwaey Penaney Community Learning Center
From a very young age, Orang Asli children are expected to be schooled within a non-native curriculum, and in a language which is not their mother tongue. Not surprisingly, a fair number of Orang Asli children do not fare well in primary and secondary school, let alone make it to tertiary level. Towards this end, two brave friends started a community learning center that seeks to bridge the gap between mainstream education and the traditional knowledge and heritage of the people in the Semai community of Kampung Ulu Tual in Pos Sinderut, Pahang. Building started in 2014 and the centre was opened in early 2015. They are in need of financial support to pay the salaries of the centre, that currently has 151 students. The ACR Refugee’s Health Care Clinic
The clinic was started in 2002 by a French doctor, who saw the need to offer medical support to the Myanmar refugees who at that time were unable to access any free medical treatment in Malaysia. The majority of the health conditions of the patients are a direct result of the harsh living: malnutrition, respiratory and gastric illnesses, skin conditions and back problems from laborious work. The clinic, run by volunteer nurses and doctors, is open for general health services twice a week and every second Wednesday for mothers’ and children’s health and wellness clinic. They are continuously in need of donations in cash and goods (medicines, vitamins, milk powder and infant cereal). Pertiwi Soup Kitchen
PERTIWI Soup Kitchen provides a humanitarian food-aid service to the homeless and poor irrespective of race or religion. By interacting with various destitute inner-city communities on a regular basis, additional support has been given to assist those who are ready to become more independent. Meanwhile, PERTIWI Healthcare Services project helps the homeless and hard-core poor who seek basic treatment for common ailments. Donations are welcome in cash and goods, read more here. Ideas Academy provides secondary education to refugees, stateless and undocumented children in their learning centre in Pudu. Most of these children do not have documents, and therefore cannot go to regular schools. Started in September 2014 with the first class of 24 students, the school now has over 156 students and a growing waiting list.

Another great post. I hear of some organisations getting a lot of stuff that they don’t need, but lacking in things they do. It’s a good time of year to remember what’s important in life. It’s easy to get caught up in the commercialism of the season, and forget what really matters.
