Makan Kitchen at DoubleTree by Hilton KL has once again exceeded all expectations by offering an incredible Chinese New Year buffet with a delightful mix of Indian, Malay, and Chinese cuisines. Upon entering the restaurant, the display of food was overwhelming, in a good way of course!
A dazzling display of dishes
After sampling some of the amazing dishes in the Malay food section, the Balinese sea bass definitely stole the spotlight. It was a perfect fusion of spices and freshness. At the Chinese corner, I was presented with a dilemma with options like roast duck, stir-fried Pacific clams, a baked soy miso-marinated sea bass and wok fried char kuey teow with smoked duck and duck egg. It was a tough one… My plus one came to the rescue and supported my vote for the char kuey teow as the winner in this section of the buffet.
Fun with Yee Sang
We were invited to join the Yee Sang ceremony, and the guests at the three tables where the Yee Sang was placed, playfully competed to toss the salad up high. I was surprised to learn that Yee Sang actually originates from Malaysia, not from China, like I’d always thought! The salad was crunchy, tasty, and colourful, just like Yee Sang should be.
Guest-chef Mike MC Wang at Makan Kitchen
We found all food amazing and tantalising, except perhaps for the Hickory-smoked beef brisket. However, that’s just my personal take on the beef, which I thought was a bit tough. According to my plus one, who is a true Chinese food connoisseur, the award-winning Chopped Pepper Stinky Tofu Beef Broth Noodles, on the contrary was a special mention and stood out for her. The dish was especially created for the occasion by chef Mike MC Wang from Taipei.
Sweet endings
Desserts…? Of course! Luckily, all desserts were mini-sized, which was a good thing, since we both had filled our tummies already with all the delicious food from the buffet. Do try the coconut dessert as well as the panna cotta, both being a sweet conclusion to the feast.
With all dishes being non-spicy and with spicy condiments available on the side, this family-friendly buffet works for everyone, including fussy little eaters who are into milder flavours.
