Sajian Istana buffet: royal feast fit for Ramadan

This festive season has come so quickly – Christmas lights, Chinese New Year celebrations, and now Ramadan has arrived.

Amidst it all, I had the pleasure of sampling the Sajian Istana Ramadan buffet at JPteres in Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur on its opening day and what an incredible feast it turned out to be!

A musical welcome

Right before entering, you’re greeted by a lovely gamelan group playing traditional music, setting a warm, festive tone for buka puasa. It makes you feel like stepping into a royal celebration, perfectly matching the “Sajian Istana” theme.

Sajian Istana Ramadan buffet – let the feasting begin

Then you enter food heaven – with over 150 dishes spread across beautifully arranged stations, it’s one of the most impressive Ramadan buffets in the city.

I started with the appetisers – the traditional Urap Kangkung & Pucuk Paku stood out – fresh water spinach and fern shoots tossed with grated coconut, chilli, and onion for a vibrant, crunchy, mildly spicy bite. I passed on the Kerabu Lidah Bakar (grilled beef tongue salad) but spent way too much time at the Chat Station. I also enjoyed the Popiah Basah and the Kerabu Ayam Jantung Pisang, featuring cage-free chicken and banana blossom in a refreshing lime-chilli dressing – light yet packed with texture and flavour.

Moving to the main dishes, the variety was overwhelming in the best way. The fish curry (red snapper in signature Asam Pedas) was a highlight – the fish flaky and fresh, swimming in a tangy, spicy, sour gravy with just the right heat and aromatic depth from tamarind and spices. The Laksa Station delivered creamy, coconut-rich curry laksa with plump prawns, firm noodles, and a broth bursting with lemongrass, galangal, and shallots. Classics like Kelio Udang & Kari Utara, Cik Ainil Yong Tau Foo, and the ever-reliable JPteres Signature Chicken Rice rounded out the mains, blending Malay, Peranakan, and multicultural influences.

Then came the charcoal-grilled favourites with their irresistible smoky aromas: Satay Ayam & Daging grilled to perfection and paired with rich peanut sauce. The lamb was tender and flavourful, while the Rusuk Lembu Bakar Madu (honey-glazed beef) melted in the mouth. Sustainable grilled seafood and seasonal vegetables added lighter, fresh options.

The sweets

And don’t forget the desserts! There are live stations with fresh Apam Balik, refreshing Ais Kacang, and creamy Cendol. The Signature Durian Swiss Roll was decadent, the Cake Batik Banana Mousse offered a fun, layered twist, and Onde-Onde Profiterole combined traditional glutinous rice balls with modern choux pastry flair. A wide array of classic Malay kuih and nostalgia snacks provided the perfect sweet finish.

The venue was understandably very busy on opening night, but the servers were efficient, attentive, and quick to clear plates or refill drinks.

Overall, Sajian Istana Ramadan buffet at JPteres delivers an authentic, royal-inspired Malaysian buka puasa experience that’s ideal for family gatherings, friends, or corporate iftars. If you’re seeking a luxurious yet heartfelt Ramadan buffet, this is absolutely worth booking. Highly recommended.
