I brought the girls for the Gingerbread House Holiday Workshop at Shangri-La, Kuala Lumpur and we truly had the most amazing time from start to finish. The moment we stepped into the Garden Room, we were greeted by a magical Christmas wonderland — sparkling trees, twinkling ornaments, festive table settings in red and gold, and even whimsical rocket-shaped decorations that made the whole space feel straight out of Santa’s workshop. The girls were in awe before we even started.
Let the magic begin!
After being transported into this Christmas wonderland, the fun continued with the highlight of the afternoon — building our own gingerbread masterpieces. The gingerbread house decorating session was such a wonderful experience (even for adults!).
Each child had their own beautifully prepared kit with plenty of coloured icing to choose from. There were also lots of decorations that the kids could help themselves to – a whole spread of colourful candies, cookies, sprinkles, festive toppers and edible décor that let them be as creative as they wanted.

My girls were a bit worried at the start that they wouldn’t know how to assemble the gingerbread house, but the chefs and the staff were wonderful: attentive, patient, and always ready to help the kids assemble tricky parts or offer tips on making their houses stand tall. It felt well-guided yet still playful, and the girls loved every moment of building (and snacking on) their creations.

Time to dig in!
Once the decorating fun wrapped up, we moved on to a lovely afternoon tea. The entire spread was beautifully arranged along a long festive table – plates of savouries and Christmas-themed desserts all laid out with such care that it felt like walking into a holiday feast.

The sweet selections were perfectly on-theme for Christmas: buttery scones, adorable festive gingerbread macarons, chocolate yule logs, Mont Blancs, and classic mince pies. The savoury items were equally indulgent, with smoked Hokkaido scallop tartlets, marinated lump crab tarts, and a rich duck liver terrine that added a luxurious touch to the experience.
It was a well-balanced and thoughtful menu that adults could enjoy just as much as the kids.
A seamless finish to the day
While we enjoyed our afternoon tea, the staff quietly packed up the girls’ gingerbread houses into sturdy carry boxes, making it so convenient for us to bring their creations home without any mess or stress. Overall, it was a beautifully curated experience that blended festive charm, hands-on fun, and delicious food. A truly memorable way to kick off the holiday season, and one the girls are already asking to do again next year!
