Sparkling Season Dinner Buffet at InterContinental KL: quality at its best

InterContinental Kuala Lumpur has been around for some time now but we have never visited it. The last time we were there, it was still Nikko Hotel (goes to show how long it’s been).

When we got the invite to their festive preview, I was eagerly looking forward to it, as was the teen. We’ve stayed in InterContinental hotels in Hong Kong and Japan, and have only had great experiences with the chain.

Sparkling Season Dinner Buffet – let’s eat

At first glance, the Sparkling Season Dinner Buffet line on offer at Serena Brasserie seemed rather small. But upon further exploration, the buffet line certainly covered all the usual stations you would expect from a hotel buffet. What the buffet line lacked in terms of length and size, was made up in terms of the top-notch quality of the food on offer.

Seafood on ice

To kick off our Sparkling Season Dinner Buffet feasting, I started with the seafood on ice section – prawns, clams, and oysters were as fresh as if they’d just been caught straight from the sea. Both the Whole Poached Salmon with Mixed Vegetable Pickles and Honey Mustard Dressing (smokey deliciousness) and Beef Pastrami, hit the right spots and along with the seafood, I was off to an extremely good start.

There was also a variety of salads, and sushi which added such vibrancy to buffet.

I wasn’t expecting to feel carnivorous but that’s exactly what happened when I saw the mains on offer – it was a true meat lovers delight. They had Slow Roasted Prime Rib and Peppercorn Crusted Lamb (both flavourful and tender) and Baked Truffle Jumbo Chicken (alas this was a bit too dry). There was also Salmon en Croute (salmon was moist and pastry was flaky).

The teen meanwhile made a beeline to the grilling station – he piled up on Slipper Lobster Thermidor, Oven Baked Harissa Whole Lamb, Grilled Garlic Bread and Jumbo Chicken Sausage. Clearly this was the winning station for him as he went back for multiple rounds!

The teen’s favourite station

The Live Fresh Tiger Prawns at the grilling station he stayed away from. He thought it too inhumane to witness them being thrown live onto the hot grill plate – no slasher flicks for him then, great!

There was also a Tandoori stall and a Popiah stall. I thought these were such nice touches! Whilst Tandoori is a popular offering at buffets, the Popiah stall is rare, and was like a nod to local hawker fare, and I simply loved it.

As for the desserts, whilst I stayed away from the cakes and sweet treats this time round, I enjoyed the fruits on offer (which included jackfruit and pomelo!). The cheeses on offer were also tempting but I decided to end the night on a light note of just fruits.

The Sparkling Season Dinner Buffet is available from 1 to 23 December and 26 to 30 December. It is priced at RM278 nett per adult and RM139 nett per child, from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Children aged five and below dine for free.

On 24 and 25 December, the Golden Feast Dinner Buffet presents a decadent spread priced at RM318 nett per adult and RM159 nett per child.
