I eagerly accepted the invite to Chynna, Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s Mid-Autumn Yum Cha Experience as it’d been three whole years since I’ve had good mooncakes. The mooncakes that I managed to find in Seoul were not the same at all – they didn’t even come close!
Let’s dig in
The Mid-Autumn Yum Cha Experience was a set course of dim sum and kicked off with the trio of Steamed Hakka Chicken Dumpling – the skin/wrap was delightfully thin, and this made a huge difference in taste and enjoyability, Steamed Curry Mackerel Dumpling – thumbs up, and wolfed down by the teen in seconds, including mine, and Steamed Chicken and Shrimp Bean Curd Roll with Superior Oyster Sauce.
Next up was the Signature Collagen Chicken Dumpling in Soup. This was greeted with silent nods of approval around the table as we sipped on the soup. You couldn’t help but feel nourished by it. The soup is a must if you’re there. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

The next course was another trio, with the prettiest item for that night: the Black Swan Thousand-Layer Pastry, so much so that I found it really hard to bite into it. But one has to do what one has to do. The pastry was light, and crispy. Along with the filling of Roasted Duck, Foie Gras and Mushroom, it worked a treat! It was delicious which didn’t make it so hard to go back to bite into the swan again – ha!

The Black Pepper Wagyu Beef Pastry reminded me of a Siew Bao. The wagyu beef certainly elevated this dish. Last of the trio was the Deep-Fried Bean Curd Rolls with Chicken and Sweet Turnips served with Thai Chili Sauce.
Stir-Fried Fish Fillet with Tauchu Paste, Dried Shrimps, Chili Padi and Crispy Ginger was up next. This was sweet, crispy, and spicy. It was a burst of flavours!

The Poached Paper Prawn with Golden Crispy Rice has got to be my absolute favourite of the night. The paper prawn was surprising as it was really thin like a delicate crêpe, which was placed atop a bed of rice. The crispy rice mixed in with the normal rice gave the dish an extra texture, which was a nice surprise. Soup is then poured into this dish, which brings back fond memories of how my grandma used to cook for me. The dish is like a warm embrace on a cold winter night. Total comfort food, and a total win for me.

Sweets to end the night
For dessert and in conjunction with the upcoming Mid-Autumn festival, we had an entire array of mooncakes, both snow skin and traditional baked to pick from. I’ve always gravitated to snow skin as it’s served chilled, and the skin is thinner compared to traditional baked. The absolute winner for me that night was the Heavenly Gold (Snow Skin with Pure Premium Musang King Durian). It was silky and ‘stank’ to high heavens but that’s as it should be! My other favourite was the Emerald Moon (Snow Skin Black Sesame Ganache with Almonds and Peanuts). This is their 2025 Signature and the combination worked a treat – it was akin to peanut butter in a mooncake, a big yes from me.

On the whole, the yum cha menu (which is special only for this Mid-Autumn season, and available from 1-30 September), felt very nourishing and healthy. To top that off, it brought back fond memories of dishes I used to eat growing up and nothing can beat that. I wasn’t the only one thinking this that night as my dining companions were all echoing the same thoughts.
