When I received the invite for Vasco’s, Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s Celebration of Crustaceans and Carvings, I knew it would truly be a buffet that our little trio would enjoy – my husband and I would enjoy the seafood, whilst the teen would gobble up the meats. And so, we eagerly headed over on a Friday night to indulge.
Crustaceans galore
First off, let’s talk about the crustaceans’ portion of the buffet. In my opinion, Vasco’s Seafood Market (as they’ve named their seafood on ice section) is still one of the largest, and most varied selections I’ve come across yet. Their seafood on ice, offers up the freshest and plumpest seafood.
For the Celebration of Crustaceans and Carvings, the Grand Cajun Seafood Boil will be on offer. Buckets filled with yabbies, flower crab, prawns and corn are cooked in your choice of sauce: Creole or Creamy Buttermilk. These are cooked on demand. We were given a token, with our table number on it, which we had to pass to the chef when we placed our order (just tell them the number of pax and the sauce of your choice).
When it’s ready, the bucket is brought to your table, whereupon the contents are poured onto a platter. I love this communal style of dining – family oriented and has everyone digging in at the same time. Disposable gloves and bibs are provided, along with finger bowls. The sauces worked well for us as the teen liked the Creole Style whilst I took to the Creamy Buttermilk. Mantau buns (crispy on the outside and soft on the inside – YUMS!) are served alongside the Seafood Boil and were perfect to sop up all the sauce.
For the month of June, the Grand Cajun Seafood Boil will also have Live Shucked Oysters – always a yes! – and Baby Boston Lobsters. There are various dipping sauces on offer to go with the oysters: seafood cocktail, onion and vinegar, hot smoked cheese, lemongrass, and Romesco. I do highly suggest you take a bit of each sauce just to have a taste. We did, but we found that we enjoyed the oysters the traditional way, just with lemon.
The Baby Boston Lobster was grilled on the spot and served immediately after. This was a hit with the husband and I. The lobster meat was sweet, firm and yet tender. Topped with an utterly creamy sauce with bits of mushroom, the Baby Boston Lobster was indeed a treat! The teen however, didn’t take to it and the husband happily took on the teen’s portion.
For carnivores
Moving on to the carvings portion of the Grand Cajun Seafood Boil, Roasted Beef was available that Friday night (there will be a rotation of different meats) and the beef was done just right – still pink in the middle. The teen automatically gravitated to this counter.
There is also the live grill section where you have chicken, beef or lamb options to pick from. The husband and I enjoyed the meats from here very much as they were done à la teppanyaki style.
Rest of the buffet
On top of the seafood and meats, there’s the usual fare at every buffet: salads, cheeses, pastas, pizzas and tacos (all great options for kids), sushi, local fare, and desserts.
I thought that the Grand Cajun Seafood Boil was indeed a wonderful buffet where premium seafood and meats were on offer, on top of the standard offerings. There’s something for everyone (even picky eaters would be hard pressed to nitpick!). Service, as always at a Hilton, was top notch.
The Grand Cajun Seafood Boil is available Fridays and Saturdays, from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. It is priced at RM238 nett per adult and RM118 nett per child. For the month of June, they’re running a buy 4 free 1 deal.
