Chinese New Year celebrations are still going strong, as we’re still in the midst of it. In case you didn’t know, Chinese New Year lasts 15 days. As with all celebrations in Malaysia, the best way to celebrate is always to have a meal together with friends and family – let’s eat! As such, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite Chinese restaurants that serve up a variety of food offerings, that aren’t in hotels, which are lighter on the pocket.
The Oriental Group
An institution in the Chinese cuisine business, this group has multiple outlets throughout Klang Valley. Food is consistently good, and the outlets are usually fully booked up leading up to Chinese New Year. Come here for the yee sang, which is served by a Kapten (one of many restaurant managers), uttering wishes with each step of preparation at the table. The Kaptens will also gladly explain what each step means if you are unsure.
Dim sum is also available for lunch.
Village Roast Duck
As the name suggests, the roast duck here is the star of the show. Besides the roast duck, and single portion meals, they also serve other Chinese dishes should you wish to have a communal dining experience.
Madam Kwan’s
This household name never fails to serve up hearty Malaysian fare. Just like Village Roast Duck, opt for either single portion meals or order dishes to share.
Din Tai Fung
Come here for their xiao long bao and wontons. They also serve up Chinese dishes and snacks. For their menu, look here.
Hai Di Lao
This hot pot restaurant is a wonderful option to celebrate togetherness as everyone gets in on the action of cooking their own food. You can even get your nails done (at no extra cost, outlet dependent) while you’re there. Unlimited snacks and desserts are also provided at no extra cost. Check out their Facebook for promotions and updates.
New Paris Restaurant
This restaurant is a favourite amongst folks from SS2, Petaling Jaya and the surrounding areas. Go for their tai chow (big fry is the literal translation, but basically they serve a variety of dishes, all cooked in a wok, over high heat), and a sense of nostalgia for how it was back in the day – they plonk a whole pot of cooked rice on your table for you to serve yourselves! There’s a dining area with a/c on the first floor but dining out in the open on a cool evening, is even better.
The restaurant is located at No. 62, 64, 66, Jalan SS 2/72, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Restaurant Siu Siu
Hidden and tucked away, with no menu to order from, Siu Siu serves up some of the best Chinese food, surly staff notwithstanding.
Fatty Crab Restaurant
Located in the neighbourhood of Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya, Fatty Crab serves up sweet, sour and spicy crabs like none other. There’s also prawns and fish on offer. If you’re with folks who don’t take seafood, there’s also fried chicken wings and satay (which are run by independent stall holders apart from the restaurant) to be had. Another dish that’s a must is their fried rice.
Go ahead and try them and let us know what you think!
