I love my cold cuts and cheeses and Bottega Mediterranea in KL is the place to go for me to satisfy my cravings. I always feel like I’m transported back to the delis in Italy when I’m at Bottega – everything is so authentic in there.
The only downside for me is that it’s located in KL, which is a bit far from where I live. So when I heard that Bottega was opening an outlet in PJ, I was one of the first few ones to go check out the shop when it opened its doors recently!
A large, pet-friendly space
Situated in Taman Megah (opposite the wet market), and occupying two shop lots, there is definitely more space here compared to the KL outlet. Upon entering, you will find the grocer and deli section with bottles of imported goods such as olive oil, truffle oil, pickles, pasta sauces, vinegar, cheese, cured meats and wine.
The dining area next door is rather minimalistic in terms of decor, but accommodates more tables than the one in KL as it is a larger space. We walked in without a reservation and we got a table immediately. We arrived there before the lunch crowd though and as we left, I noticed that most of the tables were occupied, so I would recommend making a reservation beforehand.
We also noticed that this place is pet-friendly. There were a few patrons that had their pet dogs with them, much to the delight of my kids.
Mamma-mia, this is delizioso!
Like its KL branch, the menu at Bottega PJ is expansive. There is a good range of Italian sandwiches, pastas and pizzas to choose from and I always swear by their charcuterie and cheese board.
This round, we tried the piquillo (stuffed Spanish peppers on bread) and gambas al ajillo (prawns sautéed with wine) for starters and of course I had to have the charcuterie and cheese board too! The board has a good, curated selection of cured meats paired with complementing cheeses and it is served with olives, dips and bread. Perfect to go with a glass (or two!) of Italian wine.
The kids wanted spaghetti carbonara as their mains and we also tried their patata pizza with ham, mushrooms and potatoes. The pasta was exactly like the ones we had in Italy – the no cream version, which is super flavourful made from just eggs and cheese. We also loved the texture of the pizza. Oh and don’t leave without trying the tiramisu, you won’t regret it!
Bottega PJ is definitely worth checking out if you like authentic Italian food or if you are after imported Mediterranean fare. I’m just so glad it’s in my hood now!
