We happily headed to DoubleTree Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur, to get a taste of some authentic Asian food. While there is a pasta station, they have a slew of tasty Asian areas, designated by culture. Malay, Indian, Chinese, as well as some Thai dishes. Be warned: take small portions, as you will want to try a bit of everything!
Situated on the 11th floor, it’s a bit tricky to find the restaurant if you are parking in the Intermark. Find the DoubleTree lobby first; from there you will be ushered to the lifts to Makan Kitchen.
A first impression
We found the layout at Makan Kitchen very pleasing and easy to navigate. The Chinese area was almost romantic, having little nooks with cool lamps hanging overhead. The view toward the city on one side of the dining area was fantastic. Make sure you ask for a window seat.
The Malay section
The Kambing Kuzi (lamb in coconut sauce) was so tender, that I had seconds. I also loved the baked clams. We tried some Kerabu salad as well, which was a perfect blend of citrus and crunch. The scallop salad had an interesting tangy chewy taste with a hint of peanut.
We hadn’t had enough, so we continued to explore! The salmon sashimi was very fresh and melted in our mouths, and the chicken satay was meaty with little to no fat (and the peanut sauce was not too sweet).
The Chinese and Indian kitchens
We also tried an array of lightly sauced Chinese vegetables, and some siew mai with very nice plum sauce (always a favourite), paired with salted egg custard bao. It had quite a mild taste and not oozing, as with some I’ve had. The Chinese section also had an interesting take on Char Kuey Teow, using Loh Shee ‘rats tails’ noodles. Not overly oily, with a good veggy crunch interspersed.
The Indian section had a nice selection of vegetarian dishes including the rice dish Jeera Pulau, which my husband was quite delighted with – it included fruit and nuts. The Thai section had some quite spicy tom yum, where you could choose your add-ons. Together with bean sprouts, cabbage and other vegetables, there was squid, prawn or fish balls.
Space left for desserts?
Among the desserts, we liked the Matcha mousse which was like a mini magnum, with hints of Toblerone – white choc n crunch on the outside with a gooey centre. We also liked the vanilla raspberry cake and the Baskin-Robbins mint ice cream. So citrusy! For drinks, I loved the Longan dessert drink.
