Sometimes you run out of ideas for the steady stream of visitors wanting to experience your new city. Or you just can’t face those steps to Batu Caves again. When a family with teenagers wanted to see as much as possible of the city on a whirlwind stop-over of two days, we decided to outsource. We (grudgingly) forked out the 50 USD per person on a Malaysian Heritage walking tour but it turned out to be money well spent. We saw old KL, away from the main sights. And plenty of photo ops, as you can see:
Food in old KL
The highlight of the Malaysian Heritage walking tour, as so often here, is food. A banana leaf meal upstairs of a nondescript shop lot did not look inviting but was as authentic as they come. Followed by rotis, durian and a Chinese clay pot rice – all within four hours, made sure nobody was hungry for the day.
Our down-to-earth guide did not get muddled in dates and architects but took us to temples and talked about religion as part of people’s lives and explained what the people around us were doing and why. Some of the explanations were very practical: what teenager wouldn’t need a reading of the stars that suggests they haven’t put all the necessary effort into their home work?
