You can take a staycation almost anywhere in the Klang Valley. Just pack up and drive out to the hotel of your choice. But if you’re a family with young kids, The Westin Kuala Lumpur is a place you would want to spend the weekend. Here’s why:
A one-on-one pizza making session for kids with Chef Marco at Prego
Prego is an award winning Italian restaurant which serves tantalising pasta dishes and scrumptious pizzas with the yummiest toppings.
My kids got to don a chef’s hat each as they stood next to chef Marco at the kitchen counter. They were given a piece of pizza dough and first made the base. Then they spread some pizza sauce on the base, followed with fistfuls of cheese. Chef Marco then carefully transferred each of their pizzas into the wood fired oven.
As we munched on the pizza later at our table, I realised how interesting this was for the kids. Guests can request for this ‘pizza making experience’ in advance when making a hotel booking.
Kids’ club on level 4
After breakfast, let the kids have a go at the Kids Club. Here they can be occupied with toys, books, colouring activities, face painting, fun shaped balloons and more. If you would like to leave your kids there under supervision, there is a fee of RM30 per child per hour. The staff do a great job of organizing activities for the kids, so rest assured that your kids will be in good hands! The Kids Club opens daily at 9am.
Kid-friendly menus
I love to scan hotel in-room dining menus for some reason, especially when we are too tired to go to a restaurant and it’s just easier to dine in with the young ones. It was a delightful surprise to see that The Westin KL has a special menu for kids called the ‘Eat Well Menu for Kids’. From healthy smoothies to tuna salad sandwiches (which we tried… yum!), to pasta and the adorably named pancake lollipops (for breakfast).
Dine-in options also offer kid-friendly meals. Just inquire at either the Italian restaurant Prego, Five Senses where you can eat a wide array of dim sum or The Living Room (features a great ‘Eat Well Menu’ selection and hi-tea on weekends).
The Westin Kuala Lumpur weekend programme
The hotel allows guests to make the most of their weekend staycations by offering a late 3pm checkout on Sundays! Those with younger kids will especially appreciate this, as it means we can take our time a little bit more, instead of rushing with the young ones. Here are a few ways the adults can have a little fun as well due to the late check out:
– Drop the kids off at the Kids Club and enjoy an in-room spa experience before your week begins
– Do a spot of shopping at Pavilion KL (across the road from the hotel)
– Sit back and savour a hi-tea spread with your partner
Rooms at The Westin Kuala Lumpur
Our stay was made more special as we had access to the Club Lounge. We went to the lounge for evening tea (however kids have to leave by 7pm) and also for breakfast the next day. We found the spread rather limited for breakfast, but the service was impeccable. The staff is willing to whip up anything for your kids, should you have a preference. If budget permits, opt for the Executive Rooms with Lounge access; otherwise the Deluxe Rooms are also great for your stay.
The Westin KL is located in the heart of KL along the streets of Jalan Bukit Bintang. There are numerous attractions just a short distance away, should you wish to leave the hotel for a bit. Especially the kids would enjoy Aquaria KLCC, Petrosains Discovery Centre and KLCC Park – all located about 3km away.
For the next long weekend or simply for a short getaway: consider The Westin KL. If you have young kids, this hotel tops my list of places to staycation at!
