The libraries in KL should really be placed in the malls in order to encourage the people to read, but instead they are a bit out of the way. I’ve listed a few that I’ve visited, and a few still to be explored.
A library to me is something much more than a place to go to when you don’t want to spend money on books. I still remember how exciting it was as a child to wander between the aisles and choose any book – whether it was new and interesting, or familiar and comforting. I am sure libraries encourage children to go beyond their comfort zone in choosing books, and consequently broaden their horizons. From a parents’ point of view the time spent in the library is time away from the TV and reading together, well, is just about the best thing you can do with your kids.
1. Playcentre Library in Seksyen 6, PJ
The Playcentre Library is housed in an old bungalow in a quiet residential area in PJ, only about 10 minutes drive from Mid Valley Megamall. The volunteer-run centre has a well-stocked library and a weekly play group (for a small fee) meant for under 4s.
The friendly staff told me they focus on early readers, but there seems to be good selection for fluent readers, as well as a small collection for accompanying adults. The books are in good condition and many new titles caught my eye.
Library membership costs 16 RM and is valid for a year. You can have as many memberships as you’d like, and with every membership you can borrow two books for two weeks.

2. The DBKL library in TTDI
The public library in TTDI has a bright and spacious children’s section. There is a lot of space to sit and read. The majority of the books seem a bit worn, but there are new titles as well. The reference collection had many new titles in great condition. The books are arranged according to the author and not language, so it may be a bit tricky to find books.
And while you are in the neighborhood, check out the numerous cafés in TTDI – at least Frisky Goat’s waffles are perfect for a Sunday morning brunch before a visit to the library.
The membership for the library (one per family) costs 6 RM and will allow you to borrow 3 books for 2 weeks. Bring you IC or passport copy and get your membership from the main counter downstairs. Opening times at the moment are:
Monday : 2.00 pm – 6.45 pm
Tuesday to Friday: 10.00 am – 6.45 pm
Saturday & Sunday: 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
Closed 1st Saturday& Sunday of the month and public holidays.
3. Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia
Islamic Arts Museum has a children’s library, although you can’t borrow books out. They do organise workshops on Saturdays. Call ahead and check the opening times if you want to visit during the week – we have often found the library closed.
