A jungle hike: Bukit Takun at Templer Park

April saw seven teen friends and my girls heading to Bukit Takun for a hike and to climb the jagged, sharp pinnacles and then an abseil down. As Bukit Takun is so close to the city, we just did a day trip. We started at 8am and were back at the cars just before noon, but timing depends on how many you’ve got in your group.

Getting there is pretty easy, as you can Waze yourself to ‘MIR Adventures Takun Climbing’. The location is just 15-20 minutes from Mont Kiara, using Jalan Kuching. It’s a beautiful drive after you pass the turn off to Batu Caves. The road takes you through some greenery until you see the crag up ahead of you.

Huffing and panting up the rocks

The start of the trek finds you at a community-housing guardhouse, where you commence your steep trek up the base of Bukit Takun, easy going on the road, until you hit the jungle. Then it’s huffing and panting for perhaps 45 minutes, all with carrying your own water, snacks and climbing gear. Eddy (the guide from MIR Adventures) had set up a pretty easy-for-beginners rock climbing section, followed by a short trek to the pinnacles. The rocks up here are very sharp, so be careful where you place your hands! The final abseil down was a bit hairy for some of us, as it’s quite a drop. But never fear, Eddy and his trusty aids are there to make sure nobody fails, securing a second line in case anyone would let go.

Things to note

Wear long sleeves if you can for the multitude of the usual jungle bugs. Bug spray is essential, as well as water and some light snacks. Some of us would bring gloves next time for the abseil down, as well as for the sharp pinnacles.

I would recommend you keep your group to five or less if you can, so there is less waiting time to climb up and abseil down. Also keep an eye out for siamang or gibbons! They love to call out to newcomers.

Bukit takun

Overall this was a great introduction to Bukit Takun and a lovely day out in the jungle. After your hike, head to Batu Caves -which is ten minutes away- to Pan Heong Restaurant for some yummy Chinese food. We love the hokkien mee and their meehoon.

MIR Adventures has a package for the half-day out. We paid RM 135 each, as we were quite a large group. The difficulty level of the hike, climb and abseiling is medium. I would not recommend this for kids younger than 12 years old. Do check out their site here for more details and about the difficulty rating.
