Where to buy kids’ shoes in KL?

Where do you go to get kids’ shoes in KL? Occasionally I try to coax the kids out of flip-flops and those plastic shoes but buying quality shoes for them (and me, for that matter) has proven fairly difficult in KL. On the other hand, whole nations in the tropics have grown up in flip-flops and don’t seem to have suffered too greatly – maybe us Europeans have been brainwashed to think too much about our footwear.

Schools setting specific specs for shoes are not making things any easier. Many international schools require black leather shoes – a relic from the colonial times? – and you really need to pay through the nose for these.

To be honest, the best bet finding kids shoes at reasonable prices is to shop abroad if you have the luxury of traveling – that’s not really an answer anyone wants to hear but if you are heading abroad for the school break, stock up on shoes!

In KL we think these are the best places to search for quality shoes for kids:

Clarks
You may have to visit a few stores but it’s still your best bet for school shoes for older kids, trainers for toddlers and good sandals for early walkers. Those accustomed to the traditional UK service of measuring kids’ feet may be disappointed.

Dr. Kong
I have one offspring with flat feet and when I was searching the internet for more info I came across this brand. They apparently specialise in supportive/corrective footwear and their kids’ range indeed looks ok. I am yet to try them out, though.

Labeling shoes

We received some cool stickers from Fun Printz that help the kids and teachers to match all those black leather shoes with the right child. (It is not a joke, I have had my child come home from school wearing someone else’s shoes).

I’ve been testing them for a few months now. They stick well and my fussy 4-year-old loves them. Read our previous posting here about where to get labels for kids’ stuff in KL. After trawling through the lost and found box at school labeling your stuff suddenly seems like a great idea!

They come in variety of colours and also help the kids to get the shoes on the right way.
