Treasure hunting in Kedai Kaki Lelong

KL is full of all things new and shiny, but it is the old just under the surface that makes it so special. I am fond of furniture and other pieces with a story and have always loved to rummage through flea markets, junk yards and skips. They are not so easily found in KL – or so I thought until – until I saw this see this list of junk shops.

Prepared for a treasure hunt and armed with my GPS I made my way to Ara Damansara and after a few wrong turns found Kedai Kaki Lelong – a sprawl of furniture, crockery and home electronics filling up an underground car park. There is a crazy variety of stuff and you need to be ready to get a bit dirty to get a good look. A lot of the things come from hotels, some are brand new but obviously there is also a lot of, well, junk. They have carpenters and upholstery service in case you find something you’d like fixed or altered.

I walked home with a fabulously retro fruit scale – perfect for the kids to play shop with. I have admired these scales at the markets and now I have one!

Kopitiam chairs, wooden carved stools with a marble seat and some old aluminum pots caught my eye, but since I was shopping with a friend trying to minimise the amount of stuff in her life I felt I should not go mental with my shopping either.

KKL is about to open another outlet in Brickfields, which will be great for those that can’t face the drive to the current location.

The other shop in Seksyen 19 is now under new ownership. It is smaller, but still has pretty impressive range of stuff. After rummaging in the upstairs filled with glassware, I brought home these, highly useful beauties:

If you love old stuff like me – or are opening a restaurant – these places should be on your radar. If you are trying to declutter, don’t go anywhere near them!
