Muntri Mews Hotel in Georgetown

You are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation with character in Georgetown. New boutique hotels and guesthouses opened up in the last few years everywhere in the old town, alongside with cafés, bars and shops. It’s great news for KLites looking for a weekend away.

Old horse stables

We stayed at Muntri Mews, old horse stables and staff quarters renovated into a charming hotel (I had to check what ‘mews‘ means). It calls itself ‘flashbacker hotel’. I have to say things have changed a fair bit since my backpacker days – there was absolutely no flash in hostels those days.

To me it seems the only thing that separates Muntri Mews from a boutique hotel, is the thread count of the sheets. The beautifully restored rooms are large and airy with exposed beams, carved vents and shutters to the inner courtyard. The double room we stayed at, had a lovely raised alcove type bed with two firm queen mattresses. The hotel offers family rooms as well, but even the double room is spacious enough if you are travelling with young ones. There is also a sofa and a small table with chairs.

Breakfast while watching the world go by

Soon after we checked in, a lovely pot of tea and a plateful of biscuits were delivered. Drinking water and fruit was also available in the room, as was a kettle and the usual tea and instant coffee. There are plenty of comfy seats in the inner courtyard. WiFi is available.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and is á la carte – orange juice, coffee/tea and one dish of your choise. The café, where they also serve breakfast, is shaded by big plants and from the outside tables you can watch the world go by – something I miss in KL where few restaurants are actually on the street. The restaurant itself has a cosy nostalgic feel with checkered floors and kopitiam furniture.

Neighbourhood delights

The hotel’s location is excellent for wandering in the alleys of old Georgetown, just around the corner from Love Lane and its bars. We wondered into Mish Mash a bit further on Muntri Street and had the loveliest cocktails we’ve had in a long time. Ingredients like vanilla, dried pineapple flower and home-made syrups and sugars made the cocktails just heavenly. They also had an exeptional selection of non-alcoholic cocktails with the same attention to detail.

All in all Muntri Mews is a great choice, if you want to be in the centre of Georgetown within easy access to sights and want to spend your night in a small, unique hotel. For the latest rates, please check here. And if you want to bring Bello: this places allowed dogs!
