Kapas Island

Still in the midst of the monsoon drizzle and grey skies I thought I’d share these photos from Kapas Island, that we visited just before the rains started in October. Kapas Island is a tiny islet off the coast of Terengganu.

The island is only host to a handful of low-key hotels, hence there is very little else to do besides the beach and the sea. Snorkelling is fairly good, with turtles and little sharks aplenty.

How to get to Kapas Island

Getting to Kapas Island is straightforward: just over a 4 hour drive will take you to Marang (not to be confused with Merang further north). Parking facilities are directly in front of the boat ticket offices and the jetty. There are a few shops to stock up with drinks and snacks. Kuala Terengganu airport is about half an hour away.

You can walk from beach to beach along these stairs, or rent a kayak and do the same by sea.

These photos are from the neighbouring Gem Island, home to a large resort – one of those that have seen better days. The beach is pretty and the bar has cold drinks, not a bad stop on your kayaking trip. There is a small turtle pond and baby turtles are released during the season.

Kapas is open for business again when the monsoon season finishes around late February. We’ll write another post on our lovely stay in Kapas Turtle Valley Chalets, stay tuned!
