Cooking up a storm at Young Chefs Academy

A combination of long school holidays and a busy work season left my two restless boys doing the same thing every single day: play soccer. This was not necessarily a bad thing and to be fair, they were also playing with their trusty building blocks and the occasional board game.

I thought it was time to interest them with a new experience – hence I looked for a cooking class. They have both shown some sporadic interest in how to stir and fry and bake. Maybe a cooking class will help pique more interest.

The Young Chefs Academy is the perfect place for enthusiastic young home cooks to test their skills. While learning food preparation skills is the main ingredient at YCA, each class starts with dos and don’ts of kitchen safety as well as table setting and etiquette.

Classes at Young Chefs Academy

Friendly instructors made the children feel at ease. The classes were small, about 8 and the children work in teams of 2-3 to cook under close supervision. Over the 3-day programme, the kids brought home delicious fish pockets, chicken teriyaki and pasta. It was nice to see them being exposed to a wide variety of new cuisine as opposed to just sticking to their comfort zone.

There was some interest after the class and over the weekend, the boys foraged the refrigerator and declared that they were making an omelette and fried rice. Of course, after 15 minutes of  chopping vegetables, they claimed to be tired and I had to finish where they started. Oh well, it was a start!
