New Chapter by The Owls Café at Bukit Jalil

When I heard the words “best waffles in KL” I just had to make my way to New Chapter by the Owls Café in Bukit Jalil. The location at the Calvary Convention Centre is unusual – but there is ample parking, unlike in the first Owls Café down the road – apparently the birth place of the amazing waffles. But just like the first outlet, the New Chapter gets extremely busy!

We had to wait for about 20 minutes for a table despite arriving well past lunch time. On the bright side the staff are efficient in dealing with the queue, the food arrived in a very speedy manner and there is a second hand shop run by the church next door to browse! The regulars in the shop told us that there is always a queue, so the place must have quite a reputation!

The big windows give this spacious café plenty of natural light, but with a full house it suffers from the disease most KL cafés are victims of: noise. But then I am a creature of quiet Nordic forests so am probably the only one bothered by this.

Food at New Chapter

Since I am not a fan of scramble, sausages or bacon, I regularly moan about the choice of breakfast and brunch. This English muffin topped with salmon mentai, poached egg and rocket hit all the right notes!

The kids went for Morning Daisy, that was a pretty good deal fro RM 16, we thought. The croissant was a bit dry but there was enough to feed two hungry kids and some more. We added on bacon from the extras.

Although already bursting at the seams, we had watched literally all tables around us eating waffles each looking yummier than the other so couldn’t leave without trying one. We let the kids order one – they expectedly didn’t go for the options adorned with berries and fruit I so enviously had glanced at, but a Milo Dinosaur to complement their babyccinos. And if you are wondering, it looks like this:

While us adults thought the toppings were a bit much (there is chocolate ice-cream buried in there!) we agreed that the waffle under all that was the yummiest one we’ve had in a long, long time: fluffy and chewy at the same time with a gently crunchy outside. The ice-cream was also top-notch!

We didn’t try the cakes but they looked pretty inviting too. There are also pastas on the menu, if you are not in the mood for brunch food. The bill with three mains, two coffees, two babyccinos and a waffle easily big enough for all of us for a dessert came to RM 125, which felt reasonable considering the quality of the food. I hope this place was closer to where I live!
